Illumination of instrument cluster

Postby BZ Touring » Thu Apr 14, 2005 2:31 pm

OK, so the car is an 1996 AE101 Corolla wagon (BZ Touring model).

I'm interested in changing the colour of the illumination behind the instrument cluster (currently a delightful orange).

Couple of questions:

1. How is the cluster illuminated? (i.e. lamps or LEDs, removable/replacable or built in?)

2. Is it possible to remove what ever illumination is currently behind the instrument cluster and replace it with an after market part?

3. What is the procedure for removing the illumination?

4. What aftermarket part (if any) should I be keeping an eye out for?

Any help (or web sites) would be appreciated.

Cheers.

(1) LED's or lamps, could go either way (not sure about that particular model), should be removable.

(2) You can either buy a whole new set of LED's/bulbs, or get rubber coloured covers, or the cheap way, just colour the existing bulbs in with a vivid, actually works a treat.

(3) Unscrew the dash around the cluster, and cluster screws, and pull it out, watch the speedo cable as it is sometimes hard to get back in.

(4) None, DIY is better.

4. Depends if you wanna go fully custom or just change the light colour.
just doing the lights is simple and can look good :)
