can't find neg terminal of ignition coil

Postby 2fas4u » Sat Apr 30, 2005 6:12 pm

hi could someone pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease show me a pic of what the factory ignition coil looks like on a 1990 MR2 with a 3SGE engine. i searched and searched but no much luck and one diagram was so poorly drawn i couldn't make anything of it. where precisely is it? i spent the whole day looking in the engine bay trying the follow the leads off the distributor minus the ignition coil to no avail

neg of tacho is the smaller of the two wires that plug into the tacho.

you'll also find it going to the diagnostic box in the engine bay.

The wires from the dist do not go to the coil, that is why.

The wires from the dist go to the ecu. Then different wires go to the igniter, and a third lot of wires go from the igniter to the coil.

So you will never find a wire from the dist to the coil except the HT lead.

Looking for a tacho feed? Try the EXT wire on the igniter. You may have to take it off and turn it over to read the labels. they are on the black plastic plug part.

aren't those two statements contradicting, cos the top one you are saying that there are no coils going from distributor to coil, but the high tension coil. but then in the second you are saying the only coil going from distributor to the ignitin coil is the high tension coil. :?

according to this diagram:

Image

the only cable going to the distributor is from ignition coil, but looking in the engine bay, there are two going to two different places.

and in this one:

Image wat is that cylinder directly below the radiator cap cos one of the cables from the distributor goes to that cylinder and another cable from the distributor goes to another cylindrical similar looking thing further down under the air filter box.[/img]

said before, the smaller of the two wires on the coil willl give you high tacho feed as you ask for.

It just also goes to the diagnostic box, which will require less soldering.

the tacho wire is normally black with red dots too.....
but you'd do better checking the integral connector diagram on www.motec.com.au

If you read and understand the diagram, the wire shown from the dist to coil IS the HT lead as it goes to the centre of the rotor.

If you understand how the system works you will also know that the two magnetic pickups that are shown are actually inside the dist although they are not shown like that in the diagram.

And as to my two quotes contradicting each other,
I was presuming that you were not dumb enough to think that you can hook a monster tacho into the HT lead,
but it seems that you maybe you are.

You have been given numerous ways and locations of hooking it up by lots of different people on here all of which will work.
