Oil catch can - With or without breather

Postby ants_ae92 » Mon May 09, 2005 9:58 am

What is better at keeping the oil mist out of your intake on a 4age. A catch can with or without a breather?

did you have any problems with oil blowouts in the engine bay?

I run mine to a breather and have no issues with oil blow outs in my engine bay. Has a slight bit of breathing when on full throttle (as seen on the dyno) but nothing that leaves much of a residue in the engine bay.

I suggest that ifs its breathing that heavily then the engines life may be in its latter stages.

I would do one with a breather.
But not buy these cheap catch cans which are hollow inside.
Get a proper one made with baffles/plates inside and a drain back to the sump if you want to do a proper job.

Would you want the condensated fumes to go back into the sump though? Even if it's not a problem I wouldn't bother wasting time putting a tap into the sump for that. I do sugest having one with a breather though.

Oil will drain back down to the sump, fumes will go out the breather. Thats how it works.

Pick up any perforamnce car tuning book and this is one of the first steps to do.

The oil that is draining away was previously being combusted so I don't see any advantage in returning it to the sump.

Its doing the same job but just doesn't look as good and I doubt it would last that long oil might affect the plastic over time and will look like crap when oil gets deposited in there with it being a see through bottle.

only wanting to 'fiddle' and see the results of having such a 'catch can' I don't lift the bonnet much, so doesnt warrant my spending $100+ on such a bling device

The oil goes back into the engine and wont be wasted thats why.
Well then I dont know why all the V8 aussie cars have twin drains back to their sumps maybe you should tell them not to do it. Also their oil catch cans are like 5L!!!
In my car cos I have lots of blow by when I use high boost cos my compression rings arent sealing to well as the bores arent very circular anymore, I easy fill up my 200ml bottle by the end of 2-3 runs. Having a drain will mean i wont ever have to touch it.

Seems all the engines my dad builds they always make some hardout catch can with twin drains back to the sump as well.

Also in the Burton performance catalogue it tells you how to design and build a catch can with a DRAIN back to the sump as A must in any performance car.

anyway who cares!!
But if u got a car that doesnt have any blow by and puts hardly any oil into the can then dont worry about a drain.

Thought Ausi touring cars were dry sumped? Hence the 5l dry sump tank.
I think you'll find those "returns", scavenge lines, actually taking oil from the sump.

yes they are dry sump but also have a oil catch can, The reservior that holds the oil for the dry sump system is much biger than 5L.

On my dads escort he has a 9L tank for the dry sump system as thats only for a 2L car. He has to run a 2L oil catch can system that drains back to the sump, if it wasnt that big it would over flow.

Motor Sport NZ rules requires a breather/oil catch can to be fitted to all vehicles with open circuit crankcase breathing systems. 1L volume for engines up to 2000cc and 2L for engine bigger than 2000cc.
My race car one is just a spare radiator overflow reservoir tank (a bit over 2L volume).
I run the camcover breather pipe to the catch can and then run a pipe from the catch can down to the bottom of the firewall.
This is so any fumes will go under the car NOT into the car (which often happens with a breather filter fitted direct to the catch can!!!)
With my old tired 4age having the hell revved out of it on the race track I guess that after 2 race seasons, 4 trackdays and some testing (about 1500km I figure) I found about 50ml of oil and 80ml of water (water vapour is a byproduct of combustion). I could see the approx level in the catch can through the semi transparent radiator reservoir tank so I never really worried about emptying it until I pulled the 4age out of the car.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

2L catch can is minimum for a 2L engine per Motorsport NZ requirements. The ONLY reason to feed the catch can back to the sump is where an engine may run out of oil due to excessive blow by under race conditions. Where possible this oil should be removed from the oiling system as it is contaminated by the combustion process. For a road car a little bit of basic maintenance (ie checking your oil) should eliminate any need to have a drain to the sump.

Draining back to the sump has been discussed before. Redmist knows his stuff. Im not going to return oil back to the sump.

Heaps of ppl do it Luke, thing is a coke bottle doesnt have a breather  I think on a 20V is slightly more complicated than just intercepting the hose between cam cover and intake. One hose needs to be blocked.
