genuine filters are best, we used to stock fram, but got sick of the leaks!
i think they have improved, but take a bit to beat a stock filter

I've used Castrol magnatec in all the turbo cars I've had. Not sure what the workshop uses when it goes for a service, but it'll be whatever's recommended I guess.

To the guys using 5W60 and 10W60.. why so thick oil? Remember the 5 and 10 value is how thick (or thin) it will be at startup, and the 60 is what it will be at optimum operating temp. I was under the impression a 60 grade is way to thick for a multi valve, twin cam, and turbo vehicle, especially one which revs up high.

I would be using something like a 10W40, and something decent. The Castrol RS 5W30 is a good oil.

Ummmm, isnt it the other way round??? Oil gets thinner as it gets hotter

Yep but I'm fairly sure the two numbers are independant of one another. ie 10w30 doesen't mean its 3 times thicker when its hot than when its cold. Fuel is right: 1st number is cold viscosity, 2nd is hot viscosity.

Yes I know - I have one :)

What I mean is that the engine you have is the Gen3 3SGTE, not the Gen4 like the Caldina, just clearing that up in case anyone else was confused ;)

A 10W-50 is a 10 weight oil when cold, that will thin no more than a 50 weight would when hot.. go twist your head around that one hehe

I was always under the impression that the thinner an oil gets, the less it's lubricating properties are..

the thinner oil the less stress it can handle, less protection it can provide
Castrol 10w60 I think is the very good oil for highly stressed cars,
I used it for many years (before it was called Castrol Formula RS), in my 20v which sees 9000rpm on daily basis, can't complain, it lasts longer than anything else (for example while 10w60 lasted about 7500kms without need of top up, the Mobil 1 5w40(?) did not even lasted 3000kms on same engine),
the fact that the oil becomes thicker is that it is a multigrade oil, and yes it can be compared to 60 grade "normal" oil when hot, and numbers represent not how heavy it is but viscosity...

Interesting. I see all you guys have valid points, but I was just under the impression the higher the number - the thicker it is. Sure this may be great for lubrication, it may not be as good for a multi valve engine which revs up high. A thinner oil has less friction for the engine to overcome, compared to a thicker oil. This would translate into increased fuel consumption and heat with a thicker oil (theoretically). This is what the Pennzoil rep guy said to me. He could be wrong.. he only sells the stuff, not develops it.

All I know, is that my fuel consumption increased and the engine didn't like to rev much when I switched to a good 20W50 over a good 15W40. I made the switch because being a mitsi, it consumes oil like it's going out of fasion.

The higher the second number the thinner it is and the easier it flows around the engine for better lubrication. If you have a car with high K's such 285000 like my corona then use a thicker oil such as 20W50 or 20W40 as it won't go round the rings as easy as an oil with less viscosity

Uhmm, the higher the second number, the THICKER it is dude.

20W50 is definitely thicker than 20W40.

10W40 and 15W40 has better cold starting properties over 20W40.
