Help Needed, 4age rebuit, running allmost......

Postby XS1V » Tue May 24, 2005 8:12 pm

well i bought the car with the engine not running. Its a bluetop motor from an nz new ae82 fxgt. i have had the whole thing apart, cleaned it all, put in new piston rings and new bearings in the bottom end and everything was at spec according to the book. Put the head on with all new gaskets etc as you do and conected everything up and set timeing etc. Everything has been done following the manual and torqed accordingly

Made sure everything was good and gave it a whirr, all most starts but not quite, if you hold it at about half throttle it starts.... very roughly sounds like its dropping a cylinder and at higher revs, round 3k the valves make a lot of noise.

Do i need to get some head work done, resetting valves etc??
What else could be up??

All help appreciated

I'd say it'd most likelt be distributor timing. I've had numerous occasions where the same thing has happened, helping people out who have had dist. out of engine and put back in. You need to line up the two marks in the shaft 1 being the roll ppin that holds the drive gear on and the other slightly further up the shaft

A knock? you did turn the engine over with no sparkplugs installed to get the oil pressure up aye?

Did you check the crank, rods and block with a micrometer prior to ordering the bearings? or just slap in some 'standard' bearings?

sounds like big end bearing area or even bottom end to me, don't think originaly being an auto would cause any problem as the cranks are same swapping flywheels over etc. I've got an auto engine in my trueno now, no problems like this.
