Pinking

Postby Magua » Thu Dec 29, 2005 11:05 pm

I recently bought a 91 celica gtr. Thing is, it's pinking. Up to about three thousand rpm from memory. I put 91 in by mistake (my last car ran 91) and it started to pink. So I got rid of that as fast as I could and put in some 95, not much of a difference at all. Finaly about 13L of 98 and it appears to be gone. Maybe just a little bit at low rpm. :?

Now I don't believe most 1991 celicas run on 98 octance petrol, what could be causing this?

Well it's pretty far out if it's pinking on 95. I mean it's a 91 gtr. My Integra ran on 91. :P Is it an easy fix to retard the timing?

How do you know if it's "pinking"?
Is it just coz it's running rough or are you hear the pinking sound?
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

I can hear it. Loud and clear. Doens't appear to be running rough...though I don't have another celica to compare it to.

could always drop the timing back afew degrees and try that if you wish to run lower octane. Since 1991 anyone could have set it at anything.
if you havent already(you state you bought recently), take the opportunity to replace all the servicable units- plugs etc etc.

I'm changing the oil and filter today, I'll get onto the plugs and leads etc if I have the time today.

Thanks for the advice.

That, or it sounds like a ticker machine when I was running 1.25 kg/cm^2 @ 6000rpm the other night :)

my 2A is pinking on 95 as well, which is mighty annoying as my petrol station has run out of 98.
whats a good octane to run a 2A on? i will adjust my timing if need be.

Would resetting the ecu return the timing back to factory?

Yes, but as soon as you start driving the ECU will start making adjustments again based on the knock signal it receives (within a certain range ofcourse).

So you could try retard the timing by playing with the dizzy.

Sooo since I've got 98 in my tank, once I've reset the ECU it's just going to advance the timing to suit the higher octance petrol in my tank?

Also, how do I reset the ECU?

disconnect battery , or pull the ecu fuse.

The ecu wont tune itself to your fuel by resetting the ecu. as Akane states, what it will do is alter it depending on the knock sensor (to a certian degree)- but thats not ideal for good running. Im assuming its similar to the 4age that you need to bridge two wires on the diag's box, then manually set the timing.
