WOF failure for a split engine mount?

Postby Wildcard » Tue Jan 03, 2006 12:14 pm

My girlfriends Lantis has a small split in the front engine mount - it failed a WOF at VTNZ based on this and a few other bits and pieces, is this actually part of the WOF requirements? The mount is split but certainly not enough to allow the engine to move - I just thought it was a little ... excessive.

a split mount may not allow the engine to move now but it definitely will once it breaks in half...

VTNZ= anal..

The corsa failed at VTNZ on something similar, the engine mount bracket thing is held on by 2 big bolts in the middle, and then there's a little tab off to the side and that didn't have a bolt in it. I wonder if they have instructions to be very scrutinous of engine mounts; maybe there have been a number of engines falling out of cars lately...

Sounds as dumb as shocks cant you pass a totally wasted shock that would barly keep you on the road as long as its not leaking oil visablly.

Thats really funny. My rear shocks have absolutely had it and they still fly through a warrant.

As for the engine mount, you would want that fixed regardless. They are not hard to fix and it would be well worth it. Everytime you put load on the engine / gearbox its going to start making it worse, and eventually it will start putting strain on the other mounts.

My shocks were so rooted they wouldnt come back up, yet it managed to get complianced with them, and clean WOFs etc :? There was no leaking oil so means they are sweet?

How do you know the engine doesnt move? Just because you cant move it doesnt nessesarilly mean it doesnt move. The only way you would see it move would be under engine load or you might be able to hear it when you engage the clutch.

hahaha the rear shocks in my L200 passed a warrant no questions asked but the rear spring shackle bushes and shock bushes needed replacing so after work i drove onto the pit and with out jacking it removed my shocks and changed the bushes, the shocks r so absolutly rooted its nt funny there was no pressure on them at all and i could compress and extend them with extreme ease..... shows how good warrant checks really are

yeah, didnt really have the money to spend on mounts, but couldnt see the point of putting the stuffed ones back in only to have to replace them for the wof in a couple of months anyway.

Bingo as long as its not leaking oil to them its fine and passable.

And also for no good reason at all, like my last WOF on the Caldina, reads "Left rear shock absorber worn out". WTF???? Any fool could see that the shock was fine, and if they'd bothered to check, instead of assuming the noise they heard was a stuffed shock, they would have found that the problem was a faulty CV joint :?

but that would require bending over or worse, getting under the car 8O

its painfully obvious the WOF system in NZ is woefully lacking
however the other side of the coin is how do you fix it?
to do a proper and fair inspection will cost a lot more....

however its also plain to see that a lot of the discrepancies are due to ineptitude and/or cantbefuctitis.

thats my quota of big words for this year 8O
