new plugs, leads, advance the timing? turbo? how much are you willing to spend.
The big secret in life is that there is no big secret. Whatever your goal, you can get there if you're willing to work.

run it on 98 or set the timing to 8deg
fit k&n panel filter, with ducting to the stock air box
fit face lift ecu and throttle bodies (SARD/TOMS ecu if you can find one)
replace the exhaust section under the engine to get rid of the part that goes over the cross member, leave the rest stock.
make sure you have good conditon leads, plugs and rotor.
fit oil catch can, make sure you connect both valve cover outlets to it.

thats about the best you can do without opening it up and spending some cash.

then its the usual cams/ecu blueprint stuff.
