using oil

Postby Vertigo » Mon Feb 20, 2006 11:29 am

why would a car be using oil?

as far as i know i am not blowing smoke, and theres no leaking (at least on the driveway), so i dont think the rings are bung yet. i dont understand how i can go through so much. from full to empty (on dipstick) in about 2 months?? getting expensive.

its a 1.3L N/A 2A... getting a bit long in the tooth, and theres a 4AGE conversion coming eventually, but id still like to see it go for a while longer.
TVIS just kicked in, yo!

Its probably burning it.

2 months from full to empty, Thats not that bad.

You want it just to keep going for a while, just keep topping up the oil, it'll go for ages.

How many kms are you doing between those 2 months anyway?

I can do about 5000~8000kms in 2 months, and by then it's time for an oil change anyway. I would have done several top ups in that time (seeing it's a Mitsi with over 400,000kms on the clock)

It's not that expensive to top up, just buy a 10L pack of 20W50 oil from Super cheap. You get a change out of it, and more than enough to do top ups.

What he said :-) I run a 20W50 oil in my Sentra (a SR20 motor with 287,000km on the clock) even though it is designed to use 10W40 (from memory). If I use the thinner-grade like as Mobil 1 I have to top up after around 6,000km whereas with the Magnatec I currently use I can go a full 10,000km no with problems. This even though the car doesn't appear to blow any smoke.

Also check if there is a weeping seal or something. I know on the Sentra there are a couple of oil leaks around the oil pressure sensor (and somewhere else I haven't looked) that isn't bad enough to leave oil marks on the driveway but the engine block is caked in the stuff and it could make a difference over a longish period.

I remember reading a discussion on here a few months ago about what the oil grades mean, it could be worth your while searching that too to see if helps.
We know that four-wheel drive doesn't work in a racing car, and I proved to myself that it doesn't work very well for rallycross. I'm absolutely convinced that it has no future in rallying, either, even if the regulations allowed it. - Roger Clark (rallying legend), circa 1976
