No power steering.

Postby Caveman » Tue Feb 28, 2006 7:33 pm

Im thinking of removing the power steering from my levin.

Is it possible to remove the PS/AC belt and run around a while without power steering to see what it will be like, and if it will be worth it? Will this damage the steering rack?

Thanks

Why would you want to remove your ps?

Well it would be more 'race spec' if I could use a 3' dump pipe instead of the 2' which will fit now.

Does anyone know?

I know I can relocate the pump etc, etc, etc.

What I want to know is if I can 'simulate' non-power steering just by taking off the belt and if this will do any damage. If its a pain in the arse without power steering ill look at relocating the pump, etc, etc, etc.

Oh and I also realise that the non-power steering cars use different steering links.

The ps rack without the ps connected is a lot heavier than the non ps rack.

I've done the non ps conversion on my levin and and the steering weight isn't an issue - however the non ps rack is a lot slower ratio, this can be annoying sometimes.

As you have modified the steering, you may be asked to get a cert too.

If you just take off the pump, it will be heavy as hell as you will have to pump the oil through the rack by hand.

Either relocate the pump, or fit a non p/s rack.

there must be a 'budget' version of the AE92's at some where like pick a part.

maybe even a AW11 rack might fit.. not sure but its always a possibility.

My EE90 (NZ new) has non p/s so the rack does exist. Although, bear in mind it will probably also involve using the non p/s rack ends etc, so check out carefully what bits you will need.

The steering is pretty damn heavy in the EE90 when the tires start wearing, even on 13" biscuits, so bear that in mind. Parking is going to be a pain.

ee90 steering rack fits fine, but you need to grab all the universals connecting the steering rack to the steering wheel and also the cover for where the steering rack joins the universals as all these parts are different.

theres some good info on nzhondas and honda tech about running "closed loop" powersteering, basically u remove the belt and resoviour and loop the hoses with a breather to let out excess air and it keeps the rack lubed... dunno if this would work with a toyota tho.
Could i use a bz rack in my ae91 to get faster steering?
When in doubt, down and out.

I ran my EF Civic (now dead) with out p.s when it blew it's pump apart.Just took the belt off and drove round without it for about 3months.Didn't seem to do any damage to the rack...Feels absolutly wicked with it off on a p.s car without the pump.LOTS of feedback through the steering and nice quick ratios ;)

However...don't get yourself into tight situations or you will get stuck...Lots of elbow grease when moving slow and parking...Well worth it tho ;)
