How much stronger is the T50 TRD gearset ?

Postby beeker » Thu Mar 09, 2006 3:56 pm

Just blown my T50 (lucky i have a spare), I believe the input shaft/gear failed.

I want to ensure it wont happen again in a hurry. Is the TRD gearset much stronger than std ?

I guess i can always go W series, but will then have to change the ratios that'll cost about the same??

Any feedback here.

PS. running a Stock boost 4AGZE in the AE86.

The effect of any extra strengthening in the TRD gearkit is not quantifiable.
We've sold them to competitors with reputed 230hp high torque rally engines and they've survived well - although I usually question the accuracy of the claimed power figures.
With your std spec 4AGZE I'd have no doubt the kit would hold up.
But your usage is seal which is harder on the drivetrain than gravel and you need to consider any future mods you're likely to make to the engine.

These gearsets are no stronger than standard as the physical width of each gear is the same, they are just different ratios. I have run one in my tarmac car for a couple of years now with no problems so far.
You do need to look at your diff ratio with one of these boxes as getting off the line can be a mission, esp up hill tarmac starts.

Width has little to do with strength. It's the material content & hardening processes that matter here.
Sometimes size really doesn't matter!
