Alternator or battery?

Postby trueno_20v » Sat Mar 25, 2006 4:21 pm

ive recently been getting a flat battery in the mornings and ive been jump starting it to get to work, once i got to work it would start back up easily to go out at lunch etc but over night it dies, so i got it going and took the ( + ) lead off the battery and it still idled, but when i turned the lights on full it stalled, i done the same thing to my dads car and it still ran with the battery disconnected and having the lights on full, my battery is one of the best ones from repco and is only about 2 months old so im wondering if its the alternator now??

With engine running put a volt meter on the battery and see what voltage you have.
If everything is good it should have 14.4 volts.

i have a volt gauge in my car which sits on about 14.1volts but that doesnt tell me if the alternator is stuffed or not..

Then your lucky you did not fry the electrics in both of them.

Removing the battery while the car is running is a big no no on cars with electronic's.

Ok on your old farm tractor,

Well if you have 14volts at the battery your alternator is fine.

Just because your battery is new doesnt mean it isnt crap. Either that or you have something running white the car is off, alarm or something might be draining power.

But definatly sounds like your battery.

I'll say!! If you didn't have electrical issues before, then you probably will now. If you got away with it, Buy a lotto ticket!!

yea or alternator, it may charge it enough to turn the car of and then restart it but maybe not enough to hold its charge over night or something i will test it at work tomorrow to see if there is a constant drain..

Just a thought - make sure your earth connection (that runs from the negative battery terminal to the chassis or frame) is properly connected.

My car had all the symptoms of a flat battery in the mornings, and it turned out to be a faulty earth connection. A bit of a clean up with a wire brush and a good tighten with a socket fixed it right up :)

What size cables are you using for the battery if its in the boot?
Where is your earth from the battery going to?

The batteries from supercheap are supplied from Century Batteries and have nothing to do with them other than the fact that the super force label is stuck to them.

The bosch ones from there are very good batteries and yield very little problems.
