St205/St215 air box sensor thingee

Postby DCEIVD » Thu Jul 27, 2006 3:01 pm

Does anyboady know what the sensor that is mounted to the factory air box is for?And more importantly can I remove it with out it having detrimental effects on my car?

I'm looking at having some custom intake piping made and want to know if I need to allow for this sensor or not.

Yeh or air speed, what does it look like? Is it a spear shaped thing?

Could always just insert it into one of your silicone joiners on your intake piping, thats what ive done with mine.

I can't see any use for it as Gen III+ engines all have manifold temp sensors, which they should be using for fuel and ignition compensation.

However, though it might not be used to determine fueling and ignition, I don't know if removing it will cause the engine check light to come on or not. I guess you could just replace it with a 2.5kohm resistor and the ECU would think that the air temp was 20°C all the time.

Well, my 1st gen afm gze made a temp sensor in the afm, aswell as another seperate air temp sensor in the manifold.

I'd say tee it into the new intake, or if not, then do as he ^^ said, replace it with a resistor.

It's the spear shaped thing, but it's definitely a temp sensor. Actually it's the same sensor that the SW20 uses for engine bay temp, which everyone disconnects to switch the I/C fan on permanently  .

Yes the spear shaped thing. No sorry I do not have a picture of it. But fivebob knows what I'm on about.
Just a friend of mine has it disconnected on his 215 and I was curious as to what it was - he doesnt seem to have any adverse affects from his ecu?

It is an intake air temp sensor.

Given that it goes directly to the ECU, disconnect at your peril.

That said, it is not uncommon for one SW20T I know of to spit it out, with no noticeable difference in operation. I suspect it is just an outside air temp compensator.
