3SGTE temperature

Postby Boosted_162 » Tue Aug 08, 2006 1:57 pm

Hey guys,
In my new ST185, the temperature takes bloody ages (usually at least 15mins of open road driving!) to reach normal operating temp (around halfway) and sometimes runs cooler than it normally would.

Am i right in thinking that the thermostat is at fault here? That its slightly open meaning its taking ages to heat up? Wanna find out as the thermostat seems to be an alternator out job! :?.

Also, im pretty certain the radiator cap is faulty, its showing same signs as my last GT4. Could this be the problem? I bought a new one today, but its wrong so ill get a new one tomorrow.

Cheers for your help :)

Most like to be thermostat jammed open.
With the cap, it pays to change it once in a while...

Ok, ill go in and get the right cap tomorrow.

If the thermostat was jammed open, would it run colder all the time? Cos sometimes it goes to normal temp? Or is it just working on occasions?

Cheers :D

i wouldn't say its jammed open probably jus opens too early you can chech it by removing it and heating it up in a saucepan with some water and a thermometer but if i was you ill jus replaace it quick and easy and it wont hurt to flush you radiator too since your gonna have to drain it anyway

Well considering it is an alternator out fix, i wont bother checking it. Ill just get a new one from Warwick, and replace everything. Sucks not being able to drive hard cos it isnt warmed up properly

Huh? You can't get an alternator that is much easier to remove that a GT-Four? It takes about five minutes??

You are a pack of pansies...

Haha, its not so much that its hard to do, its more the fact its my only car that goes, so im limited on time to work on it as im working 6 days a week currently.

Ill change the thermostat when i have time, hopefully that will fix it. Cheers for your help guys :D

my st185 seems to be doing the oposite, It reaches full temp just at idle after about 10minutes, and its sits at about just over half way on the guage. When should the 2 fans at the front operate and do the operate together?

my temp gauge only goes up to 1/3, and never really gets any higher than that. I havnt really looked much further into it, but im sure something needs replaced. Although disabling the VSV will get rid of that pansy 5psi while the car warms up.
I had vtax :(

my fans arnt working at all, one of them was when i bot the car about 4 weeks ago, i checked the fan fuse and its fine, i was thinking is there anyway i could have effected anything when i installed the head unit, because the aircon is pretty close.

Definately thermostats if its not getting up to half way. I run no thermostat in the racecar and that will idle at 70' which would be around a third.

If the thermostat is stuck open it will drop sometime even right down to the bottom of the factory gauge on the motorway at night

If you're worried about your fans not working unplug the coolant temp sensor switch on the bottom of the radiator, this will make your fans run continuously, if they don't run with the plug out try a known good relay otherwise your fan itself is probably stuffed, I had to replace the radiator fan on mine.

Lol, bit late there Brad  This was actually on the black one you've got, on its original engine.

My ST185 does the same sorta thing, it only ever reaches 1/3 of the way up the gauge, never any higher. I think I need to replace my thermostat :D

its good tho that these things stick while open other wise you'd probably be blowing head gaskets?

seen lots of hondas stick closed... havn't really seen 3S motor thermostats stick closed til date.

Anyone else?

Ok from rummaging around, i 'co-incidently' found a brand spanking new thermostat for a 3sgte in my garage lol.

Ive done it with the motor out, havn't really done one on a mr2 with the motor in.

are there any c**ts that need to unbolt out for this thermostat/flush work to go smoothly? (other than the thermostat housing). Coz from memory, there shouldn't be nothing in my way but just want to make sure there isn't even before i get my lazy arse to the car to find i don't want to do it.
Car is pretty far away and i can't check it... Anyone ? 8O
