Brake Pad Replacement On ABS Brakes

Postby Muzzie » Tue Sep 26, 2006 9:46 pm

I've done a search, couldnt find anything. prolly not using the correct keywords on something.

All i wanna know is, when replacing pads on ABS brakes, can you just use a clamp to push the caliper piston back in as normal or is there something special i'm meant to do.

Thanks

clamp the brake hose and open the nipple, use a bottle to catch the fluid, you dont want fluid going back through the actuator or it may flick on the abs lamp, then your in trouble

yeah i've heard you can damage the abs valves (same thing?) when forcing fluid the opposite way to normal.

i've never clamped a brake hose tho, loosening the nipple on the caliper has always worked fine for me (on non-abs cars)..

ive never had any problems just forcing the calipers without pissing around
however yeah loosening the nipple sounds like a good idea

how do you do that without braking it???

cant you just leave the line hooked up,

unbolt one caliper bolt and lift the caliper up,
remove old padsopen bleed nipple,
depress piston,
close nipple,
new pads in,
caliper back on,
bolt on,
open nipple,
bleed,
test drive

do you need to unhook any sensors or anything when doing abs cars???

You leave it hooked up. You clamp it on the rubber hose.

i'd say unless the line is in average condition, it should be able to handle being clamped briefly. The are designed to work under harsh conditions after all :)

Yeah you should use proper brake hose clamps, they are rubber tipped with a good spread of force. If you want to use normal vice grips put something soft on the tips...

Real brake hose clamps aren't that expensive though, if you change pads your self then you shouldinvest in some
