Caldina Speed Sensor Error

Postby Stu- » Sun Oct 01, 2006 4:52 pm

I've been having a random problem with my GT-T. I've very randomly been getting the check engine light come on with the VSC light and the Over Drive light flashes. The other interesting thing that happens is the tacho and speedo stop working.
After the first time it did it I took it to Shore Performance to get it diagnosed and it popped up as a speed sensor malfunction. Since they didn't have any experience with Caldinas I decided to not get them to fix it. I've had the airbox out and found there is two speed sensors. One on the front of the box and one on the top. A friend at Toyota confirmed that they are identicle and have the same part number. I bought one new one and swapped that in and it defnitely made a difference, drove heaps smoother and the error went away for quite a while but now I'm getting it pop up every now and then - say once ever 500km or so.

Does anyone have any experience with an error like this? I'm set to buy another sensor so both are new but at $160 each (retail is over $200) I'm not sold this will fix it. Next thing I'm going to look at is the wiring and see if there is a short or bad earth. Any thoughts?

the speedo problem has happened to me a couple of times and to quite a few other gt-t owners IIRC. With mine i just turn the car off, wait a few sec's, turn it on again and it usually fixes itself.

I have a similar problem in my auto aw11. After the speedo cable snapped the overdrive light flashes and over 80kph the engine check light comes on. Hmmm

My friend I had the same problem... The problem is not in the speed sensor but in the gauge cluster itself... My problem was worse the first time it happened where the car went into spastic mode and everything went to arse... I took the car to an auto elec, he called back 5 mins later saying it was all fixed and all he did was tugged on the dash board... The problem continued to a point where the speedo and tach stopped working every now and again, and all it took to fix was a hard slap anywhere on the dash... eventually it all stopped working all together so I took it back to the auto elec and he came back to me saying it was a bad solder in the dash unit... They sent it off to a cluster specialist who fixed the problem and now all is fine and dandy!!!

hope this helps... Mark
