hard shifts

Postby avinesh » Wed Nov 01, 2006 6:53 pm

i was driving home from botany today an at the lights my gears sort of went stiff it was harder to drop it in 1st while stopping at the lights an then engaging second took a bit of effort an also third an fourth slowly..... gears dont crunch or anything just really hard to shift only sumtimes an sumtimes its really easy to shift into gear..... i checked the gear box oil an it looked black in color so im changing it tomorow with redline mtl gear box oil..... i have already checked the clutch fluid level an its at its fullest..... do you guys think a worn out oil would do this i changed the oil 2-3 months ago, i used castrol vmx oil.....

Sounds like the syncros are wearing, if you blip the accell as your preparing to change down at lights does it change easyer? if so Yup Syncros.

Chances are, its that and only that.

Try and rev match as you change down, some advice i took from somone, helps get into gear faster to engine brake ( if thats your style of driving ) as well as prevents some of that crunching it into gear wear on the syncos hopefully causing them to last a tad longer.

My RX7 did that with the MX5 gearbox, hard to shift up gear, but it crunched like a mofo..
Just rev match when changing and it was a bit easier.
Now being rebuilt tho :D

If its all gears going like that at once then I wouldn't imagine it to be synchros. Not very likely they would all go bad at the same time. Sounds more like the clutch is getting pretty worn or not quite disengaging completely, slave cylinder could be leaking a little or some air got into the system or something.

box is not crunching an the clutch was changed 2 months ago an even when the car is turned off the gears are still hard to engage..... but once you force it in it become easier an then hard again after a while

I think its the master or slave cylinder.

Does the clutch pedal have much slack? and does it feel a bit sticky when u push it in or release it ?

Your gearbox is stuffed man, stop driving your car as if it's a race car, it's just a MR2 afterall. Sell it, get yourself a Nissan.

If you don't drive a Nissan, you don't know what you're missin'

Yip I would say your cable is gone or atleast is on its way out. Had the same symptoms in my ae101, the selector cable had broken
