4A clutch compatability

Postby RS13 » Mon Jan 01, 2007 7:50 pm

Hi guys,

Bascially, I need to know what clutches interchange between the FWD 3A/4AC/4AFE/4AGE factory clutches.

I'm looking to replace the badly slipping clutch in an AE82 with 4AC (sohc carb), with a secondhand jobbie, (car has 4/5 months left on wof, then is being derby'd, so not much point getting brand new!) but I need to know what I can pull a suitable clutch off.

Any help would be great, or if you're in Chch with a clutch that would do the job, I'll gladly take it off your hands!

Cheers. :)

Well, over a year later, this car still lives, with the same slipping clutch that its' had for nearly 160,000km of its' 270,000km.. so help me get this car to 300,000km!

I don't have a transaxle code on the chassis plate, only AE82R etc.. is there a code on the gearbox somewhere (had a look, can't really see anything), or does anyone know flywheel size/spline count etc? I'm still after a secondhand clutch, basically wanting to know wether I can use one off a blue/red/silvertop 4AGE or whatever.. sizes would be marvellous. :)

And if you've got one lying around that would suit, let me know, cheers. :)

And also any hints and tips on doing a FWD Corolla clutch, I've never done one, only Nissan and Honda FWDs.. do the CVs pop out as per normal, or do I have to undo the bolts on the driveshafts? Do I just drop the shock out, and leave the outer CV in the hub, and pull the box off as per normal as well?

Any help = sweet. :)

Detach steering rod ends? I've done nearly 20 fwd clutches, never had to do that yet, is that really a Corolla thing?

AFAIK they have flanges on the inner CV's, just unbolt them and Helens your uncle. Better than taking the outers outta the hub.

4AGE's use a bigger clutch (1/2" an inch i think) so you will need a 3A or 4A one

makes it easier to get the cv's out but they do squeeze past if you just drop off the suspension.
