Turbo Upgrade 3SGTE Gen2

Postby asweetdude » Wed Feb 14, 2007 11:35 am

Hi all,

Has anyone done a turbo upgrade on a Gen2 3SGTE? (ST185 GT4)

reason i ask is im wanting to know what sort of boost i can run without blowing the engine to bits.

Was thinking of running the CT26 un gated but ive heard they like to spit their parts out your exhaust if you do this to them.

Can anyone confirm this?

Also, If anyone has done a turbo upgrade, what did you use and how much did it cost? i wanna stay away from using new headers etc. so one that bolts to the factory flange would be good. Am not too worried about gettin a custom down pipe as theyre not very expensive.

$2000, Turbo
$7000 Supporting Mods.

If you run any turbo "un gated" your asking for trouble.

if you want a bit more power go ct20b off the gen3 gt4.Get a good quality metal head gasket it you wanna boost over 12 psi.I would say 15-16 psi max, that will give u enuf time to save for a new motor before it blows up.definatly go ebc to control the boost.

Theres a bolt on T04e kit on trademe, but this will prolly require bigger injectors etc. Otherwise a CT20B is the only other 'bolt on' upgrade turbo. Im gunna be using a Garrett GT3071R, but that will be with alot more mods.

They are way too small if you mean injectors off 5SFE.
in fact they are twice smaller then stock 3SGTE injectors.

definatly ct20b for ease of installation and cost.
they pop up on here or trademe every now and then for between $500-700.
Mr Revhead does them new for about $2000.
depending on how much you love your car it will get you a low 13 or a high 12 down the 1/4 mile.

we (Alltech) have done so many upgrades this year on the CT26's
i think we are on to our 6th one now...

pretty simple..
1 x 46trim T04E Compressor wheel (new of course)
1 x Steel turbine wheel & shaft assembly (new of course)
machine Compressor wheel, bearing housing & Compressor cover to suit.
rebuild (Bearings, Piston rings, Orings, etc...)
all up including labour & machining and GST $1,480..

gets rid of the lack of power above 5,500rpm
and bolts back on in place... no mods need to fit...

with any upgrade you dont need to run lots of boost,
say on the above upgrade 12psi will well out do 15 on the stock unit...
(if you start to run over 15psi on the stock turbo you start to go backwards, creating more heat in the air, making the intake temp hotter,
meaning less hp..)

running the turbo "un gated" ... not a good idea
you must have some sort of wastegate if it is the internal or an external gate. or you will over boost. can you say 25+psi of boost on a stock engine, recipe for disater your stock injectors/pump wont cope, & will lean out the fuel if your not lucky good by engine...

as i said when i get to work i'll post a price for the upgrade & some pictures..

Cheers
Chris

Got dyno plots of cars fitted with these? I'd be quite keen to see.

Hmm, if your price isnt too bad, i think it could be a good option, as my engine has done high kms.. and is due for a cambelt in the next 10 thou.

Then again, gettin my engine to auckland and then back might not be so easy.

you don't tend to send a whole engine away for a turbo rebuild :P

Now you metion that so would i...
we have done so many of these but had no one show us a dyno sheet...
might have to con my mate (91 GT Mr2) who we have just done one for, to get his on the dyno...

and pictures as promised...
Image

the one on the left is a stock CT26 C/wheel from a ST185 Celica / MR2
& the one on the right is a 46Trim T04E C/wheel that has been machined to suit the CT26.

just doing another one now so when that is finished i shall get some before & after pictures... (we now have two other celica Ct26's to do.)

Well...

You confused me aswell.

I didnt reliease turbos had piston rings?

I understand why he thought to send you the engine

it's not really a piston ring as such, but it's a ring on a piston shaped thing that does a piston-ring-y job (keeps compressed air on one side and stops it going to the other side).

I personally would never bother with an upgraded ct26 again, having had one on my old st185. Not worth the $$$

offer me a good figure around there for my spare Ct20B if you want ..

Its available to a good home for the right price if you want to build up a tough bolt on turbo upgrade

Sounds very tempting, but still, dont know if the engine will handle the extra boost. what does a CT20B run anyway? Keeping in mind that my car has done 194000kms. Although it doesnt smoke or show any signs of having mechanical issues.

Hey I have ST165 with CT20b on it, the ST165 had done over 200000kms, and I tell you CT20b did get me from 15.0 to 13.5 quarter mile ;). With CT20b and 16.5psi I get ~180kw at the wheels. The only problem I have with CT20b is when I put 3" exhaust system it started overboost all the time.
So if you have stock exhaust system (or atleas 2.5" piping) you should be fine.
For me it did a big difference, no loss of power after 5500rpm for sure...
I think for 300Hp or near at the flywheel CT20b is the best turbo.
Generally 300Hp should be plenty for road car, while keeping it drivable, of course you could put all those fancy turbos (to get 400+Hp) but the problem with them that the power curve will be very peaky and car will be very sluggish to drive.

If you intend your car to be at least 1/2 competitive, ditch your CT2x in flavour for a TD06SH-20G or similar.

If you're absolutely sure that you'll be ok with around 250hp at the treads, then yeah, go CT20b.

Anything more than 250rwhp, don't bother with CT2x, get a real performance turbo.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.
