Strange Sound Comming From 4AGE Silvertop (Knocking)

Postby Cokeman » Sun Mar 25, 2007 8:43 pm

Ok, my engine (1992 Toyota levin, ae101, 4age silvertop)has been making a weird noise for a while, but nothing serious or that loud...

I was driving home from work on friday when i suddenly heard a real loud knocking noise.... It only happens during acceleration, there is no knocking when im idle or anything, only when im accelerating and the revs are on, if i sit there and rev it then it makes the noise too....

The other thing is, it makes it mainly when the engines warm, if its cold it dont really make any noise, just a knock sometimes..... Any help would be appreciated..

Ive pulled the site cover of where the pullies are, and im certain the noise isnt comming from in there, and im certain it aint a VVT problem either...

Big end bearings on the way out...

I remember when I destroyed my big end bearings on my 4age. Intially didn't make a sound when the engine was cold (oil was thick) but progressivly became louder as the oil beacame thinner. And yes it did sound like the noise was coming from the head but I was mistaken when I dismantled the bottom end.

Don't drive it, until it is fixed... you MIGHT get away with just new bearings.
If you keep driving it you will have to replace the crank and a rod and bearings.... and maybe the block too if it throws a rod.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

ok thanks for the help, guess i'll be leaving it parked up till i get the $$ to do it... any ideas on how much it would roughly cost if i am lucky enough to only replace the bearings?

Case of if you have to ask, you probably don't know how.

Guess a better question would be do you want to learn to do it or pay someone...

If you learn to do it, probably looking at:

Big end bearings ~80-100

Plus some gasket goo for the sump. New oil, new filter.

Can get away with doing it in the car, dropping off sump, undo big ends, slide piston up bore, new bearings on, bolt back together. repeat 3 more times. then goo up sump and botl on.

Or if your paying labour, add hundreds.

That is of course if it is big ends. if its mains its abit more. As the crank has to be loosened/taken out. Means cambelt off, pulleys off, oil pump off, rear seal off. crank out, new mains and back together.

You should be taking the crank out anyway and insecpting for cracks etc. But if you carefull you should be able to tell in the car if the crank is rooted or not. (scores, marks etc on bearing faces). But, this is the kinda rangi way...

well i'd rather do it, or learn to do it i guess, dont wanna be spending hundreds to get it done, cant afford to be taking it to a garage and being charged an arm and a leg to do it at the moment, but need my car going again, i just hope in that case that it is the big ends then.

While you are doing the big ends, just pop a couple of the mains..then you should be able to see what the general condition of the mains is and if thats your problem

It might even be worth taking it to a tried and true mechanic some one who is rarely off the boil (even the best can sometimes get it wrong) Don't wanna start ripping off your sump if your engine mounts end up being to blame sorta thing.

I'd be getting the problem professionally diagnosed before you starting ripping the engine apart. I had a similar knocking type noise on my ae101 which myself and others thought may have been the big ends and it ended up being that the drive belts were worn. The noise would only happen when warm too.

However the knocking wasnt 'real loud' as you describe

In my case, it was too late and I had also fukt the crank also so I just found a donor 4age that I fitted myself which went much harder :)

If you are planning on keeping the car I'd also replace the rod bolts too,
which probaly means pulling the whole thing apart.

If you're not very experienced, doing your bearings is the first port of call on the journey to knowing how your engine works.

I'm lucky to have had someone really helpful and knowledgeable available should I have any probs (like getting the crossmember out of a $&#$% ee90) but yeah.. bearings are piss easy as long as they all come out unworn and not hammered elliptical like the ones in my old 323 (more boost.. more bitches?).
