Supercharger Oil

Postby m4vr1k » Sat May 26, 2007 8:03 pm

Hey guys.
Finally got my ass into gear with supercharging my S13.
Fuel system is done (255 lph Walbro pump, SARD fuel pressure reg, S13 SR20DET injectors), just need to plumb the intercooler piping and BOV and im away.
Quick question re: supercharger oil. I was hoping to have the car mostly done tomorrow, and i am pretty sure that checking and adding oil when the charger is on the engine will be a major pain in the ass, is it possible, and worthwhile to use a substitute oil?
Otherwise i have to wait for Toyota to open on Monday, and will be waiting till Tuesday or Wednesday for my oil
Cheers!
Zac

Gear oil is ideal. I used some castrol stuff

Here ya go

"Castrol VMX is an advanced technology SAE 80W, mild extreme pressure gear oil with special viscosity stabilisers to overcome cold shift baulk and hot rattle problems in most four and five speed transmissions and light commercial manual transmissions. Castrol VMX is suitable for transaxles of most front wheel drive vehicles fitted with transverse engines. Castrol VMX should not be used in Hypoid differentials.
Meets API GL3 and GL4 performance requirements"

Okay, so there are two differing opinions.
Gear oil is hardly thin oil, 80w, quite thick. I would have thought something thin like mobil 1? or that new castrol Edge stuff,

the oil in the s/c lubricates two helical cut gears that spin rather fast....

the genuine oil is quite thin. thinner than engine oil.

I should've said earlier that I would reccommend waiting for the toyota stuff.
Was just giving you an example of other oil that some people use.

I got the info of a US mr2 board about the VMX and I used it in my car. Was fine.

Hve you checked whether its already got oil in it also. Just that they are a sealed unit and its common to buy 2nd hand ones with oil in them still. Don't want to flood the damn thing :)

yeah, ive checked it, its dry as a bone.
I will wait for the Toyota oil, hell, maybe it will be easy to access once all the ancillary crap is back on the engine.
Not working on it today, doing some filming for a movie, will get stuck back into it tomorrow.

Toyota stuff comes with a syringe(sp?) Its easy if you do it slowly, cos air has to come out as the oil goes in so don't dump it in other wise it all just pours out.
