It depends on you how you want to do it? ie.. run the lines under your car or you could run them in the cabin, is it going to be a race car?, daily driver? etc... you may run into surge problems with the AE85 tank and may want to look at getting a surge tank setup.

well its gonna be a daily drifter, meaning drive to wrk daily and use it at the track when i get the chance, whats easiest to do? my mate has a kp60 starlet with a 4age and he said i will only need return lines?

so it's got a 3AU in it? excuse my ignorance but are they carb? if so then you will probably need to change all the lines and fittings as i doubt they are suitable for EFI as it is much higher pressure. i doubt the ae85 fuel tank is very well baffled so it might be wise to invest in a surge tank if you plan on drifting (or infact any fast cornering)

go to green lane speed shop the have everything you need for ur fuel system.

you will prob run the car with -6 lines, make sure you get the teflon inner line not the rubber.

It already has a factory return line, you could just bung the external fuel pump inline on the factory supply fuel line but really its not ideal and I wouldnt recommend it. Best bet is to have new bigger lines made up and routed under the car. I ran mine in the cabin but that was because it my surge tank setup is in the boot and I dont have any interior and its far easier to run the fuel lines.

fuel

Postby panda_dan » Tue Jul 31, 2007 1:19 pm

Mate i'v just done this setup in my ae85. So you can come look at mine if you want, i'm in hillsborough.

I have attached a simple bird's eye view picture of what i did. It's not a perfect system by any means but it gets the job done at a good price.

Image

I am using my std ae85 fuel tank (which has 2 basic baffles in it FYI) with a surge tank and 2x fuel pumps.

Simple, cost effective set up.

I went to BNT and got some 3/8ths bundy ($90) and a pipe bender ($25 or borrow mine) and bent up a new feed line along the underside of my chassis. Which you must do unless you can find an original ae86 feed line - and some rocking horse shit while you're at it.

The original 3au feed was designed for 3 to 4 psi. You're now needing about 40psi. so your original feed is only handy as the new engine fuel return.

Then buy a surge tank. ($80 trademe)

Put a blacktop in tank pump ($20 pick a part) into your fuel tank and hook it up as the lift pump to go from your fuel tank to your surge tank.

And an overflow return from surge to fuel tank, and use your original 3au feed as the new return from your engine to your fuel tank. (Not back to your surge tank, as the fuel will be warm and you dont want that heading back to your engine)

Now that your surge tank will be getting fuel lifted to it by the blacktop pump, hook a 2nd hand Vl pump ($80 off trademe) between your surge tank and your engine supply bundy.

I bent it up to poke thru the floor near my surge tank.

Only other thing you'll need is 50cm ish of high psi rubber tube to use as fittings between surge / fuel tank / vl pumps etc ($30 repco) and about 15 small jubilee clips ($30 repco)

And that VL pump will flow thru an inline fuel filter ($20 repco) to the fuel rail

Pretty cheap and i'm hoping reliable

I am looking at doing this very soon, just a few q's for panda_dan.

What kind of surge tank did you use? (similar to the one in the link?)

Wiring pumps up is pretty easy, I just wire the pump directly to the battery (fused, of course) and have a relay off IGN to turn it on when the key is on

you should have it switched via ecu for safety.

I know, the donor car had a seperate ecu for fuel pump though, it was in the boot, and I only got a half cut so... I wasn't sure how to do it from the main ecu.

I will fix it when I get an aftermarket ecu, I'm not too keen on starting a large fire after an accident. My current safety measures involve me being conscious and able to move after the accident :?

anyone else remember Cam Hardy's? NZV8 at Pukekohe.

A great reason to run the fuel pump thru the ECU etc etc.

All 4AGE ECU's ever made had this function in them standard.

Postfach,
What car did you have that had an FP ECU in the boot?

JZX90

Pretty sure it was in the boot, I couldn't find it anywhere in my half cut and someone with a JZZ30 told me their one was in the boot too.

surge tank

Postby panda_dan » Thu Aug 02, 2007 12:34 pm

Steelo: Yep that's the guy made my surge tank I think.

Just get one with one 12mm outlet on the bottom for your feed, and 3 10mm outlets on the top. Those trademe guys should make to your requirements no extra cost if you ask nicely.

doin_donuts: I'll be in touch over the weekend if I get some time to work on the car on sunday prob most likely.

Because I'm not too certain, and it's still on topic, which fittings do what on this surge tank, obviously the bottom one is the feed to the engine (i've written that on there now), but which top one is which?

I figured the one on the top is the feed to the surge tank and the one on the side at the top is the overflow back to the tank? Is that right?

Image

Also, if I put one more fitting on there, can I have the return from the engine going back to the surge tank instead of the main tank? This way there is only one return line to the main tank so I won't have to modify that. (I thought if i did this any pressure in the surge tank might cause a problem, maybe forcing fuel back up the return line, which I don't want...)

surge

Postby panda_dan » Thu Aug 02, 2007 2:41 pm

Ah yep you've got the order sorted with the top two. It doesnt matter ALL that much, but yeh you'll be right with that order

You'll find that your return is best going back to the main tank as you dont want warm fuel returning from your engine back to the surge, as it will just swirl and go straight back to the engine again.

Your fuel tank will already have 3 pipes going to it: feed, return and a breather. So you dont need to midofy your tank at all. Just use the vacant tank breather as your engine return pipe (as the engine return is low pressure)

When you say 3 10mm outlets on the top, one is the feed to the surge tank and one is the fuel return to the tank......whats the third one for? breather?

Also, are you able to take some photos of your setup? :D
