Winsdscreen Wiper Motor Removal - instructions please

Postby DeeCee » Mon Jul 30, 2007 9:43 pm

Okay.. so the weekend started with a bang and ended with a fizzle for me.
18's got put on, spent 2.5 hours cleaning car after it not being clean for 9 months and then some a-hole dinged one of the front guards!! GRRRR

Then last night, whilst parking the car in the garage, the windscreen wipers fizzled out.. intermittant and non functioning.

So after checking with the BGB off celicatech, i did a test to check the functionality of the wiper motor just now and its dead.

So... how do you remove the wiper motor?
I checked my old haynes celica manual and it says unbolt and remove.

But it attaches inside the scuttle panel somewhere so how do i dis-attach the motor from the mechanism?

And if anyone has a spare wiper motor.. let me know :) 1990 Celica ST185

Cheers

Dave

Cheers for the offer, but I've already tested the motor as previously said and the wiper motor is dead. All i need to do is remove it, and i'm sure i will figure it out some way or another.

I find it more rewarding if i do my own work on the basic areas of my car.. saves me thinking about taking over the world you see :)

should just be able to unbolt it from the firewall, and pull it away slightly, exposing the hole into the scuttle panel and showing the knuckle type joint that holds the motor to the arm. just pop that off and you should be able to remove the motor

Sometimes it depends on the particular location and design of the wiper arms and location,

but if you remove the bolts that hold the motor to the firewall and then move the wipers up the screen by hand it will allow the wiper linkage to come out the hole so you can pop the linkage off the motor.

Hints for working on wipers,

Always work with them unplugged if you are getting into the motor arm part. They just about have enough grunt to chop off a finger,

and dont remove the arm fron the center of the wiper motor, ( usaully a 10mm head bolt or similar) unless you want to spend the next 3 weeks trying to get it to park in the right place.

depends on the linkage joints, some vehicles if you pop the plastic joint it's lifespan after being put back together is severly limited because they are designed to be put together at the factory and never removed

DOH!!!!!!!

removed the arm to get the scuttle panel off.. will try moving the linkage by hand and seeing if the motor detaches easier

Don't worry, i've removed the same thing and as Matt says, just takes a bit sometimes to get it back on correct. Not knowing this at the time my wipers ended up going off my screen and scratching a bit of paint (only a KP60 tho :P) you'll work it out

Putting the arm on/off the linkage at the bottom of the screen adjusts the span of the wiper and can get it off the screen,

Changing the location of the arm onto the shaft of the motor will never let them get off the screen, just change where they stop,
so they will still sweep properly, but may stop mid sweep etc etc.

If you got them off the screen you changed a different part to what I mean.

If you have the motor disconnected, and put it on slow speed (constant on, not intermitant) does the arm go round one way constantly? Im just checking if my spare motor does actually work properly.

Yes the motor always just spins one direction, and so the arm will always do full circles and just keep going till you turn it off.
