How Can I identify c52/c56 gearboxes?

Postby ChaosAD » Sat Sep 15, 2007 4:21 pm

I need a c52 or c56 gearbox that can have a starter mounted on the intake side. Have found a 92 levin with a silvertop fitted (car has drum brakes so must be a conversion).

How can I confirm the gearbox is a c52 or c56 and not the origional gearbox that was fitted to the old 4afe or whatever it had?

If it was still in the car I could see what revs it does at 100km in 5th, but its no longer in the car.

Any idea's? would the number stamped into it be of any use?

The only tell tail sign I know of is to look above where the passengers side cv enters the box.

A C52 'should' have a black piece of plastic as a shield. a C56 has a smaller shield but its part of the alloy g/b casting, and you cant attach the piece of plastic to a C56.

how about the standard gearbox that comes with a 4afe? as they have different final drives. ie 100km/h in fifth is 2,500 as opposed to 3,500rpm

the c52 and c56 found in a ae101 both have the black sheld on the cv.

A ae111 is cast the same and has places for the bolts to be taped for a sheld but no threed

so in short that dosnt help unless you have a AE111 c56 box infront of you
Alot of c series box's have greenish writing on them im not sure if that can tell you?

You can easly tell if its a ae111 box (but may not be able to tell Ge VS Fe ratios) AE101 they all look the same

Iv seen "c52's and "c50's on late 90's 4afe's im not sure if much internally differs but the crown and pinion is the main reason for lower rpm I belive

So there is no way to visually distinguish if an ae101 box came from a 4age or 4afe?

if you have the shafts the 4age ones have the right shaft with the hanger bearing, apart from that I think you would need to turn the input and do the maths of the output to get an idea of ratio

Iv had all of these box's apart and from what iv seen there is no tell tail signs to id them :x

Hanger bearing? is that like a universal joint in the middle of the shaft so the car behaves like the shafts are of equal length?

yea along those lines... found on the ae101 an ae111's has 3bolts onto the block with a bearing that holds the shaft so then the cv is after that... rather than the FE setup that runs one shaft all the way over with the cv right up at the gearbox

I usually work out the ratios to make sure what box it is. Only way to be really sure.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Thanks, ill find out if it had those shafts.

So I put it in 5th and see how many revolutions of the driveshaft it takes to turn the input shaft 10 times or something. I guess If I hold one shaft and turn the other id have to double it though.

I just multiply the gear ratio and final drive ratio together aye?

3rd and 4th gears will tell you if its a c56

c52
1st 3.166
2nd 1.904
3rd 1.31
4th .969
5th .815

c56
1st 3.166
2nd 1.904
3rd 1.392
4th 1.031
5th .815

and Ge final is 4.3
