Few questions

Postby Emperor » Tue Jan 08, 2008 4:15 pm

First -
Who can pull apart alternators and get them chromed up / painted?
Are they easy to undo yourself and put back?
Just looking to clean up the engine in my seven, paint/chrome a few peices.

Second -
Who can do custom fuel lines for surge tanks? and is it better to buy two better pumps (one in tank, one after surge tank) or is the standard in tank one fine?
dont want the surge tank to run out before the stock pump can put more into it

Yeah alternators are piece of piss, I've had mine chromed, looks heaps better. Just take the cases to any electroplater and they'll sort it out.

Any performance type of workshop will be able to do new lines. I think most people use the stock pump as a lift pump for the surge tank.

not alway easy as bearing seize, break brushs, regulator, recifiers get broken.
i would get auto sparky to pull i apart, get chromed and then reassembly with bearings and brushs save time later in it not $&#$% out.

If you break a rectifier I'd suggest you missed a bolt someplace! 8O You'd have to be pretty rough to do that.

start pulling it apart, if you're confused, put it back together exactly how you found it.

i'd never pulled one apart until the other day when I pulled it to bits - found out what the brushes inside an alternator actually looked like, replaced them - then put it back together.

best of all, it actually works now!

doesn't the return from the engine normally go to the surge tank?

although that would mean that the fuel would get warmed more.

yeah just got told that.

but apparentally need to change the intank one anyway, to a low pressure one, and a high pressure after the surge tank.

in my rx7 im using
standard intank pump to supply the surge tank,
then bosch pump from surge tank to engine,
engine return back to surge tank
and an overflow from surge tank to fuel tank,

if you run the engine return to surgetank you must run an overflow!! you will have no control over fuel pressure if you dont!

as for the alloy bits and polishing,
im leaning towards having them powder coated or if i find a money tree hpc'd, polishing looks cool, but is lot of work to keep shiney,
i polished all my intercooler piping 2 years ago done about 2000km and they are in desperate need for some polishing or coating!

or procoating (refer my project) barry has a proper lifter pump that you can buy, it's designed to be able to run dry just in case you do run that low,

i however am using the std gze pump for lifter
-8 main feed (making my own lines, it's easy)
through fuel filter to a bosch o44 external pump
-8 line to engine bay with another inline filter to fuel rail
-6 return to fpr
-6 from fpr to surge tank,
-6 overflow from surge tank to fuel tank
