what to take off a b/top to use on a s/top 20v

Postby hsmidy » Thu Feb 14, 2008 5:34 pm

hey

so i managed to score myself a pretty cheap blacktop engine, loom and ecu, only really brought it to use the vvt pulley as my one is stuffed,

now i have heard that the black tops are a better engine but what can be taken off them to be used on a silvertop(for some kind of gain), i dont really want to swap the whole engine over as my silvertop has only been rebuilt about 30,xxxkm's ago.

cheers

transplant, blacktops are a pretty serious revision over the ST.

personally i dont think you would regret it.

yeah but like i said i just dont really want to have to pull out my near new silvertop for a blacktop will 120,000kms on it,

plus the engine used to be on an auto and my car is a manual, do the manual flywheels bolt straight up to the crank(it looks like it would )?

and i pressume the silvertop trans bolt up all good too?

You could always swap over the head including ITB and exhaust manifold if you have them.

yeah i looked throught there but just wanted to make sure what parts were actually able to be swaped over between engines.

with swaping the heads over would i have to run the blacktop ecu?map sensor etc?

I don't see why you would have to change to blacktop ecu

Have seen blacktop conversions running silvertop ecu and loom( with AFM)

Swap the head and loom and ECU. The Silvertop bottom end is better (conrods) but heavier.
The Blacktop head is better and with the head and the ECU and sensors, you can get rid of the AFM and run some aftermarket trumpets (properly boxed and with a good air feed fo course)

There was a guy on here that swapped the complete blacktop top end onto a silvertop. I think he posted dyno plots even.

ok so the general consensuse is run the black top head with loom and ecu,

are there any bits involved in this convesion that might catch me out?

obviously ill have to wire in a switch for the pack/neutral switch because of the auto loom, is there anything else?

hey thanks for finding that post, well by the sounds of it (and not seeing those dyno results) theres not really that much to be gained by swaping heads, just a little in the upper end.

leave the silvertop bottom... this means you keep using the silvertop cambelt.

Blacktop head.. get it surfaced, light skim .2-.4mm
TRD .8mm heady
Blacktop TB's, headers, cams...

wouldnt bother with the hassle of blacktop ecu. Silvertop one will run it just make sure you seal the plenum up air tight... the bottom dosnt like to seal.

I ran s/t ecu/loom on my blacktop went well. The only other thing you may want is the blacktop pistons but why bother if you have rebuilt it... the TRD heady and a light skim will get you 11-11.2:1
