im pretty sure its somethin to do with the fact that from factory it reads either right temp or wrong temp, and not an actual temperature. so when you turn it on it just goes straight up. its an on or off signal

They usually earth through Temp sender so if its not right it will fugger up your reading. Also, is it an aftermarket sender too?

Is it in a pipe in the middle of two rubber hoses?
Is the base of the sender or what the sender is screwed into earthed?

I'm gonna guess if you answer yes to matts first question you need to answer yes to question 2 for it to work properly, try earthing the body of the sender or the metal pipe thing its screwed into

Are the sender and gauge a "matched pair"? I.E. Same vendor?
Most vendors will match their gauges to their senders. Assumably many senders are the same, but I suspect there are some that aren't... Can anyone else confirm?
