When I had a play with one back when I had a starlet,
I found the 5K I had, was a hydraulic lifter type, and so couldn't get anything but a std cam to run in it, and gave up on the idea.

But I have seen some info somwhere on converting them to solid lifters like a 4k etc etc.

They're pretty basic motors, the biggest issue you'll have is the hydraulic lifters, but I believe you can still buy solid ones new from Toyota.
You'll want to get a non twinsquish head unless thats what those pistons were made for, otherwise you'll be wanting to run it on diesel
Also dont buy into the hype of 3K bigport heads, they're nothing flash. Or the 3K-B twin carbs either, they're no good. You'll want a pair of side drafts to take full advantage of the bigger cam.

you will find alot more information on http://www.club-k.co.nz

if using a race cam then the 'NZ new' km36 5k is the way to go. these have solid lifters instead of the hydraulic ones. otherwise theres a FAQ on club-k on how to use landcruiser lifters and 4k-u pushrods i think?

upgrading cam, compression, carby and valve springs will wake the engine up.
