Brake problem... odd noise

Postby BlakJak » Fri Oct 31, 2008 7:49 pm

I had a wheel bearing done by a local garage recently.
Ever since I got it back from them, i've been hearing an odd rubbing type noise under braking - only hear it in the last coupla wheel revolutions before coming to a stop, and only if it's dry and there's no background noise...

It's been this way for a coupla weeks so I got frustrated with it tonight and jacked up the car, took off subject wheel (rear left) and with some help from the mrs, attempted to simulate. Only happened under braking so I had the mrs gently push the brake pedal while I spun the wheel and listened for oddities.

This is what I found:

My guess is that blemish on the brake disc is making the odd noise when I brake... it's really annoying, I was worried I was damaging something to start with.

The mechanic tells me 'it takes a while for things to bed back in'. That's fine but I'm not sure how the above pictures mesh with what he told me.

What does TS think?

If the pads look sweet and there are markings in a particular spot on the rotor then get them skimmed or chuck new rotors on

And for the record, I've seen some pretty horrible rotors that dont make a single noise and work perfectly. Take the pads and find a bit of concrete to roughen the surface up on and see if the noise is still there afterwards.

Noticed I fudged the second image. Fixed.
How do I know if I have a bent backing plate?
Is it possible the mechanic screwed something up?

didnt look at them too hard - but there's no squeak yet, and I passed a WOF at the same time as I got the wheel bearing done.
