POP.... Big Oil Leak (Picture Update)

Postby MR2BOY23 » Fri Jul 31, 2009 12:28 am

SW20 MR2 1990
3SGE

Long night :(

Giving the car some shit tonight, was kinda low on oil and a bit of oil stabiliser revving at around 3-4000rpm. Something went pop and oil rushing out (not sure exactly where ) but just to the left of the oil filter when looking down at the engine.

No oil left its all leaked out, any ideas on what it could be Im guessing crank seal? Hoping its not that serious, any other possibilities ?

Probably the oil filter seal. How long had it gone without a change? Lucky you didn't spin your bearings with the oil level low and giving it a bit of stick :P

A rod probably felt like getting some fresh air!
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Looking at it in MR2 format or FWD format? IE is it to the center of the engine or the cambelt side of the oil filter?

Has the engine ever been rebuilt? Could be one of those plugs (I forget what they're called) that are in the side of the block. If you put new ones in using something too small to knock them in, they can curve, which pulls the sidewalls of them in, and they don't stay in place properly.

Other thing it could be is the oil pressure sender.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Frost plugs - if one of them went pop all he would have lost is coolant. They have nothing to do with the oil system.

Side of transmission, thats where most of the oil was coming from, IM still looking for more leaks. It looks like the metal has bent outwards

If all the oil is drained, take the sump off and check to see if anything looks abnormal on the crank/rods. Gives you a chance to look at the rear main seal as well

put a spanner/socket on the end of the crank and rotate it, you wont do any more damage than what has already occurred, and it'll be the easiest way to see whether you've done something terrible to the rotating assembly/block or not - if you can turn it then it's probably not completely poked. Then start doing stuff like removing sump etc to find the cause

is it definitely engine oil?
would be weird if it spat out the rear main
though I have seen it a coupla times before on an AE111.
unsure of the cause of that one as the guy who built the engine took the car away pretty fast!

While you've got the sump off, check the pressure relief setup on the oil pump - i had a car that did pretty much exactly as you describe (apart from it was full of oil) turned out the oil pump got a little bit of crap stuck in the pressure reflief valve part in the oil pump and popped what was a frost plug type setup out up near the head and just kept pumping oil out there till it was empty.
Was an easy fix once i found the problem but alot of $&#$% around finding the problem - you don't tend to check the oil pump when there's oil coming out high in the block under pressure

If it has popped the rear main seal you could have a crankcase breathing problem check your pcv valve and hoses
