Fuel Consuption for a 4agze with supercharger removed

Postby kiwi4agze » Tue Nov 22, 2011 7:23 am

I need to find out how much fuel a 4agze with the supercharger removed would get thru at idle per hour, a rough ball park figure is ok but if anyone knows exactly it would be great.

Silly question I know but its actually pretty important.

It will still be running the low comp pistons.

At idle it will burn the same amount, whether the supercharger is there or not.

At idle the s/c is not engaged so yeah won't make a difference.
I doubt very much anyone here will know. You will need to ask people who have used them for what your are wanting to use them for.
Won't be hard to test if you have a running one!

The idea was to run the 4agze to start the merlins as the merlin uses a starting cap which is now illegal to use thanks to the green party!!!

But it takes a good few hours of pre-flight checks and mantience and was going to use the 4a on a trolley setup to provide power for the mossie instead of idling the merlins. Run a bank of altenators to provide power while I work on her and use that to start the merlin.

It was just an idea as I have one sitting around and the cost of a generator would be really $$$ and made by honda.

Not really of much use at all, but my Commodore uses approx 2.5l/h at idle according to the fuel computer. Thats a 3.8 V6.

Just a note that 'low comp' in a 4agze can either be 8.0:1 or 8.9:1.

Easiest way to tell is if it has/had an AFM which would mean 8.0:1.

Don't forget once you load it up with alternators it is no longer idle.
With sufficient electric load you can stall the engine, unless you have throttle control to compensate.

So if you are sucking 5kW out of alternators, then the engine will consume a lot more than it would on idle.

My guesstimate at moderate load (say 5kW) you are looking at ~5-10L/h.
I could not find a chart for 4AGZE, but here is one for 4AGE 20v s/t:
Image

basically at full throttle @ ~2000rpm it consumes ~300g / kWh, putting out about 20kW. Run it for 1 hour at that load it will consume 6L.

This consumption does not scale back. The most efficient range will be about 2500-3500rpm at full throttle for 4A.

Food for thought, 4A-GZE would realey mean injection??????

Something like that Id be running the most basic carby engine possible. minimal number of wires, fuel line etc. Not sure if your thoughts were to convert to carby or not.

4AGE is wrong engine for this.
5kW diesel generator is not that expensive.

I was hoping to use it for towing at the same time, hence why the car engine.

The Merlin drink petrol at a rate which make them un-economical to run. I was going to tow it with the 4a in a simple frame and use it to power the mossie while it was on the ground.

4k i heard was a good boat anchor.

It depends on how much power it's making.
Full throttle uses more than just idling.

Google up "brake specific fuel consumption"

It's in units of pounds per HP per hour or a metric equivalent.
Normally about .5 at full throttle.
An engine is at it's least efficient when idling so the figure could be closer to double.
If it's driving alternators then it's no longer just idling.
You want to fly?
I thought you were supposed to be educated in such things in order to get a pilots licence?

I'm with Sergei on this one, diesel generators are quite cheap secondhand, given that most of the air transport fleet flying in NZ 40 years ago was piston-powered, I'm willing to bet that there may be a few old 24v or 28v diesel generators lying around workshops/hangars somewhere?

Any leads a good 28v one would be great?
A lot of the old stuff has been scrapped or sent overseas.

The cheapest 28v diesel i found was in the thousands!

I can't recall seeing anything like that around where I work.. the only 28v dc feed we mainly use is on the ATRs and that runs off the 115v carts. I'll ask around though! I'm sure you're probably on a NZ aviation forum or two? Maybe stick a WTB ad up?
