12v when ignition is on

is there a common place people T into to power things such as boost controllers? would the stereo power be ok?
the faster u go, the quicker u get there

I just used the wiring for my cig lighter seeing as I never use it

Stereo power is OK, but it is on in Acc position (so is the cigarette lighter).

I would have thought the ignition barrel would be your starting point? Could look at ECU power but I would personally try to keep away from that in case of voltage drop issues.

yea looks like in gona have to T from there, as i need power for the boost controller but also want to put my turbo timer in. ohh well time to get stuck into it!

Behind the ignition barrell would be the best place to pick from. Be sure to put a fuse in line just incase.

is IG2 ment to have power when there is no key in the barrel? because black-red dose. also what fuse would you use? ive found that brown-white only has power when in ON position. so ill use that for boost controller power

IG2 might be different colour entirely...

looking at the random Celica repair manual:

IG1 - Blue-Red
IG2 - Black-Orange

Black-Red and White is actually coming from fuse box (ultimately battery) to the switch.

Black-White is start position.

IG2 feeds EFI Relay, Injectors etc.
IG1 feeds rest of the stuff.
I suggest hooking up to IG1 (Blue-Red), and using 10 - 20A fuse (depending on the load), if it is just boos controller I would even put 7.5A blade fuse in there. The ignition switch is fused by two fusible links (one for each feed) of 30 or 40A.

depending on the car maybe start at the fuse box?

in my KE there were about 3 or 4 spare terminals which switch at various ignition stages, just connected some spade terminals straight on to them.

cheers for all the help, still hoping sum one has installed a turbo timer in a levin and remembers what colors are what, so far all of the diagrams i have seen don't correspond with the color wires i have.
with the multimeter how do i tell what IG1 and IG2 look like? i get acc as its on the barrel and i can see what terminal gets power but im unsure with IG1 and 2

Grab a test light or multi meter

key off only 1 or sometimes 2 will have power. these are the feeds to the barrel and also your turbo timer. (from memory - white)

turn key to accessory. one wire will liven up... this is accessory. dont need it. If you connect it when the turbo timer is running your stereo will also.

turn key to on 2 more should power up. you will need both for your turbo timer however there is a difference between the 2. Ign 1 will STAY live when cranking, IGN 2 will die when cranking.

hers what each wire dose

black-red = has constant 12v power, drops to 7v when cranking
blue-red = has 0.5v when key off, then 12 when on ACC
black-yellow = has 12v when switched to ON, and drops to 7v when cranking
black-white = nothing? has random power when cranking only
brown = has constant 12v power, drops to 7v when cranking
brown-white = has 12v when switched to ON, and drops to 7v when cranking
brown-red = nothing? has random power when cranking only

can anybody make any sense of this?

so far im thinking... black-red will be constant power to theturbo timer, blue-red must be acc, but confused to what will be IG1 and IG2, one of them will be power to the boost controller iswell

use either black-yellow or brown-white for switchable power.

A good way to find out is to bridge one of them with constant 12V, start and turn off the engine, if the car keeps running, then it is the one you want to use for turbo timer.

Turbo timer is a bit of gimmick imo.

So Black/Red = Feed to key barrel (Drops because of the load during cranking) = Connect power feed to turbo timer
Blue/Red = Accessory - Dont need
Black/Yellow = IGN 1 (Again drops due to load during cranking)
Black/White = Crank output - Don't need
Brown, Brown/White and Brown/Red are the same as the above but is a 2nd circuit.

So...
Try Feed to turbo timer = Black/Red
Output from turbo timer = Black/Yellow

If that works all good. If it doesnt you will need to add the Brown/White to another of the outputs from the turbo timer

cheers guys, will hook it up in next couple of days, the turbo timer says it needs, IG1, IG2, constant power and acc, but il leave acc out as mentioned above

bit of an update, finished it off today, have the BLITZ Twin Solenoid Boost Controller and the hks turbo timer installed and working perfectly!, the only thing is the turbo timer has a wire going to the hand break sensor which is meant to turn the timer off if the hand break is released, but it doesn't :( but apart from that the wiring is perfect! thanks to those who contributed!
