E51 LSD gearbox - recommended oil? Redline?

Postby gmacrae » Wed Feb 29, 2012 12:39 pm

Hi guys. Looking to replace the oil in the aw11's gearbox soon - pretty sure it's a E51 - haven't even looked. Supercharged LSD gearbox anyway.

I want to use Redline HD shockproof but not sure if that'll suit the diff (not worried if it shudders a bit, just want to protect it) - any opinions out there? The gearbox will probably be getting some abuse, drag slicks etc.

Cheers

Gene

i used some redline stuff in my corolla when i had it and it was good at first then got worse.

then switched to some AMTEX TRANS LSD 75W90 and it was much better compared to the redline stuff.

Its important to mention exactly what Redline oil you used, just so others know that its not actually the brand thats no good, as the specific type used might have been incorrect for the GB in question.

The shockproof stuff isnt a synchros best friend, as the additives in it ends up varnishing the inside of the synchros and make gear selection difficult over time.

Does your box need a GL4 or GL5?

something i just read recommends GL5 for the s/c gearbox... not sure i'd trust the source tho. That motul stuff sounds like the ticket anyway

I used the shock proof redline before as I was giving my boxes a hiding.
But over time the syncro cones end up super shiny meaning the syncro cant grip well enough.

Since changed to Motul Gear FF LSD (designed to be used in FWD boxes with mechanical LSDs) and its perfect!

Quite pricey though:

Yes can confirm this, my evo gearbox is getting harder to get into 1st and 2nd gears and 3rd crunches at high rpm shifts. Going to pull it apart, clean it up replace synchros and use different fluid.
I'm using Redline lightweight shockproof oil.

Exactly^

Provided you need a GL4, redline MT90 will be a godsend to your synchros, and transform your shifting.
