Broke my gearbox a little....

Postby cat007 » Tue Jul 31, 2012 11:25 am

So after doing a 'wee skid' a couple of weekends ago I notice a slight knocking sound. Luckily I'm only a few hundred meters from home so I drive home and park up.

Haven't touched the car since then but then last night I thought I'd put her in the garage and record what the noise sounds like:

Clutch in, makes no noise, clutch out, sounds like a wood pecker lol

Shifts through all gears including reverse fine. Each gear has drive.

Before I pull the box out and take the housings off - lets play "What could it be?"

My starion did exact same thing.
Broke 2 teeth off 2nd and also broke the rivets in the clutch. So not sure which was making the noise. I assume it was the clutch as when I pressed the pedal in it stopped making noise.

Seems odd how it's such a consistant knocking. I first thought maybe a dropped bearing but then I thought that would result in a more inconsistant knocking/scraping?

Sounds similar to my 1g when i ran the mains :/ does the clutch pedal vibrate like crazy when it's engaged? Drop the sump and check the pan (or cut the oil filter in half), if it's full of metal, brrm bmmmm.

Nope - clutch pedal is smooth as.

Knocking appears to coming from behind the engine - it does sound like engine bearing knock - but it's further back than the engine - thank god.

It could be a broken tooth as well. Push the clutch in and everything stops spinning, release it and the broken teeth will be catching and knocking.

Mine was real constant as well, but the faster the motor speed the faster the knock.

Does the frequency of knocking change in different gears? If not, I'd be thinking maybe something in the clutch area rather than the gearbox...

Does your clutch have a sprung center?

Didn't you rebuild a gearbox a while ago with some mystery washer/bush/ thingy-mabob left over at the end????... If this is the same box i'm putting my money on that being the issue..

Noise ina box probably wont change between gears as all the gear are always meshed the same no matter what gear you are in.

Yep that's correct! I was never able to find where the C clip went.
You could be onto something! :)

Sure does....basic clutch, full face organic clutch plate and 2,800lbs pretty plate. Nothing fancy.

I haven't noticed. It increases with rpm, don't really want to drive it more to diagnose. Sorry I know that's not particularly helpful.

If its making that kind of noise then its going to have to come out regardless. And from the sound of it, it should be really obvious once things are apart.

Pull the box, check the clutch, take the ends off the box and see what isn't pretty any more.

Yep. If there's chunks then that'll mean something bad lol. Depending on what they look like I should be able to tell where they came from.

However there may be nothing on the magnet which may mean nothing...

if you care about it, pull it out and tear it down

if you dont, drive it till it stops driving then replace

bad bad bad idea

remember cars are a weapon, you dont want to be driving something that could suddenly seize and send you spinning out of control, potentially on the motorway, around school areas etc.

im on the "pull gearbox out now" side

Yeah I don't plan on driving it any until I've pulled the box and assessed the situation.

If you remove the gearbox and find the clutch assembly is ok, you will quite possibly find the first bearing in you gearbox that supports the pto shaft that is directly sticking out of the gearbox has failed.when the clutch is out it is all engaged spinning this shaft in the gearbox. Most likely the cage has collapsed and the more you use it, the balls will begin to favor one side and group and seize
