supra jza80 wobbles its ass in the wet

Postby 92mr2paddy » Mon Oct 22, 2012 1:24 pm

not sure what causes it, its the mrs car and she been complaing its dodgy in the wet. so today in the dry it was sweet could hardly feel anything but in the wet is wiggles quite bad in the back, just a lil to each side,

checked today under the car for any loose or bend balljoints but couldnt spot anything obvious, the diff bolts to chassis had a lil gap in the rubber mounts, (ive had this problem with my s14 subframe but it didnt make the rear wobble or anything like that.

any help be great, i will probably go get a wheel alignment soon see if this changes anything, car has toyo 265's rear so traction hasnt been a problem

Use a very large screwdriver or pry bar on all the stuff.
Wiggling with your hands can only show the very obvious.

Have a look on the engine build plate if its a AO2B diff this is the code for a Auto Torsen Diff.AO1B is the open diff code.

01/02 denote different ratios don't they? From memory B is Torsen, A is open for Supras & Soarers (talking about the last letter)

sweet will check that tomorrow,
ive only ever had a lsd diff fail in the way that it stops locking, but could the diff be causing the wobble? are there any arms in particular that casue this? maybe swaybar or something?

We have had a couple of torsen supra diff's in the race car that caused a similar feel under power, like it would drive one wheel then the other,
replacing the diff head fixed it, and they stripped the diff to repair it, but could not find anything wrong with it.
Reassembled it refitted it and tried it again and it still did it
so the LSD was binned.

interesting, it does it even at low speed like 70ks just rolling or maintaining speed in the wet you could really notice it, in the dry rolling or under full power (single turbo) there is hardly anything wrong with the feel of it,

so you say they couldnt find anything wrong with the diff. mmm hope its not that haha, will get her to get alignment and see if it still does it.

torsen lsd's can be interesting creatures.

i'd also check rear sway bar & its mount & bushes

My guess - slightly worn ball joints in the rear suspension arms.
This allows the wheel to steer a tiny bit and makes the rear end move around.
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Also, check the rear cradle bushes arent flogged out as they make the rear squirm when they are past their best.

yeap so how do you know by looking at the ball joints (other joints) if they are stuffed if they wont move be putting force on them with crow bar (or watever i have) like none of the lil grease boots of the ball joints are ripped, havent checked every bolt but the ones i have are tight,

cheers for the help

What is the current alignment specs?

The "lance alignment" is BRILLIANT for road driven supras, and gives you much better rear tyre life than the factory specs.

I was going to comment on this earlier, but you mentioned tyres having plenty of traction so it isn't a problem. Tread depth is the first thing I'd have been looking at, especially if it was wet. If you can't displace your water, you're going to sit on it and squirm like a bitch.

I find that all of the big rwd toys will squirm around a little in the rear on bump once you go low enough - they start gaining Toe and Camber quite quickly past a certain point and this can make the rear steer itself around over bumps

Gotta pay the cost to be the boss!
