Oil filter thread swap help

Postby Mr Ree » Mon Jan 07, 2013 8:45 pm

Hi TS'ers,
A few years ago, I fitted my car with an 19 row Setrab oil cooler and thought I may as well take the opportunity to install a remote oil filter relocation kit at the same time, but the kit I bought came with a different thread so that when I went to fit my genuine Toyota oil filter, it wouldnt fit.

Does anybody know where I would be best to go to find a replacement with the appropriate thread, so I can go back to using good filters instead of whatever ryco one fits lol

Thanks in adavance :)

First thing you need to do is measure the tread of the fitting, and the seal id and od.
Then you can look for a filter.
Or just ask the people you got the kit off what filter is meant to fit. Then use filter cross references to find one you like

I know the thread pitch and the seal ID and OD, as I had to measure it in the first place to find a filter to suit. My issue is that I want to run a genuine Toyota filter, or TRD filter, and they dont fit the thread I have currently.

The people I bought the kit off are like most Trade me vendors selling aftermarket car parts... gone with the winds lol. But the kit was supposed to come with an assortment of common thread types, mine only came with 1, but as I had a track day the next day, I had no time to sort it so just grabbed a suitable Ryco off the shelf in the workshop.

No, the sandwich plate with the oil lines coming from it, thats mounted against the oil filter housing on the side of the block screwed on fine, its just the thread for the remote oil filter housing thats the issue

Does the filter spigot come out? If so have you looked to see if the inner thread matches the inner thread on a Toyota?

I had the same problem with a relocation kit I bought from one of the sponsors here, never end up using (bought another one from GSS). You could machine new threaded tube to in place. The Chinese kits come with two adaptors for the block side, but only one thread (M20x1.5) for the filter. The one I have (still on the shelf as I was very busy at the time and did not return it) comes with a threaded tube on the filter side, it should not be too difficult to machine a new tube with two threads (M20x1.5 on one side and whatever UNF that toyota runs on other).
otherwise Subaru or Nissan filter should fit.

Why Toyota does run imperial thread on oil filters? Probably because they were copying American engines in the beginning...

Yes it does, and no I havent. The nightmare that was installing the lines etc to the side of the block makes me never want to go under the intake manifold again lol. Sometime this year when I get around to installing my FFIM, Im going to remove it all and have the lines shortened so they can be run in a more sensible fashion than they are currently.

Hopefully by then, I would have sorted this small issue out though :)

Its not that its THAT important to run a genuine Toyota oil filter, I just prefer to run the big arsed 90915-YZZD3 filter that comes on the Lexus V8, and I guess after years of being able to run it, not being able to now, irks me somewhat.

Its not fanboyism though, so if you have any suggestions on an alternative quality oil filter, Im all ears. I considered going to a cartridge type but they are not typically stocked by most NZ places I have looked at so far.

I hadnt given what type of cartridge much thought to be honest, I was just reading on BITOG and saw that alot of chaps in the US run cartridge setups so they can run a larger filter.

Do you have any suggestions on which brand of filter would be the best substitute for the Lexus filter I mentioned earlier?

I know I can cross reference but what would I be cross referencing to if I had no idea of the quality or lack thereof, of the brand in question?

I dont really want to apply guesswork to buy filters that fit my currect relocation plate thread, if I can simply source the correct thread and go back to using what I always have, but if I cant do that, then I would appreciate advice from anyone who knows the good from the bad before I start cross referencing anything.

Thanks :)

find an old filter book from Fram /ryco etc and use your current filter as the reference, then go through and find one that suits your dimensions/ drain back valve etc

it isn't rocket science.

What I'd do is go get the easy to get common Ryco filter and cut it open.
What's the p/n of it? Can cross reference to who evers genuine it is and check one of those out
