oh and the advantage wellington has over auckland is their decent transport system (Bus and Rail)
In auckjland all we really have is Bus and that aint anything spectacular.

if we had a good enough public transport system, then we wouldnt have such a bad traffic problem..

but i guess theres no incentive to not take your car aye :/

exactly...whats with all these pillocks talking about Ak paying for its own roads ? If every city in NZ relied on its on taxation / revenue most couldnt afford shit, Aks economy helps / supports a hugh percentage of the rest of NZ. therefore we do pay a large part of whats being spent on the roads.

Now, if the centre / strong point of the economy (AK) is suffering due to severe congestion / traffic problems....then it makes sense that the Govt will endeavour to remedy this problem ASAP in order to keep the countrys biggest working / tax-paying population on its feet......which effectively helps the rest of the country.

...and yes, AK has NZ's WORST CONGESTION...despite what you whining Wellingtonians may like to think. Its a fact. Get over it.

It doesn't help that the general Auckland attitude seems to be "We're bigger than all you guys, so stuff yas, pay for our roads."
It'd would be interesting to see if it was Wellington roads that were being paid for by everyone in NZ!

Remember, its not actually Aucklands decision, its the Govts decision, doing whats best for the country.

Well duh...I'm not saying its aucklands decision, but when it comes to polls or discussions like this, aucklanders tend to get all high and mighty about it - yes a generalisation, but for the most part they do.
I'm merely saying, what would it be like if the shoe was on the other foot?

Well, if Wellington had NZ's busiest shipping port, and transport from it was getting swamped by the worst congestion in the country, then thats where the money would be going. Im sure the same people would still dribble on about how bad the roads in their little town are, without seeing the big picture.

your not seeing the big picture
petrol is expensive, its an inelastic good (economics owns me) so its gonna be, but the thing is it has gone up once and its going up again, and we are footing the bill, nothing wrong with that in your eyes, but it is in ours, its not the fact that aucklands mess of a roading system is being tidyed up cos thats what we would all love, its that we are being bum raped at the pumps because of it
there is a better way of getting those roads fixed, but the government would rather make easy money through taxing petrol heavily as they know it will have no effect on demand and that they will and have made a lot of easy money, little of which has been put to good use

yeah, I agree, but the agument was about the decision to spend the countrys money on AK, not on how the extra tax is being generated.

Didn't Auckland build a rail system that never got used?? :?

If you don't want to sit in traffic, leave home a bit earlier or take an alternative route, or hell, if you can, carpool!! There are plenty of alternatives before you have to start spending money on roads that aren't causing injury or anything!!

State Highway One right through the South Island is in shocking condition, some places to a point where it's actually dangerous, but they get no funding for that because Auckland's CBD workers don't want to sit in traffic!!

Why not just move out of Auckland? Why doesn't the economy move some if it's businesses to Welly, CHC, Dunedin, etc and that would take some of the congestion away!! 8)

the rail system is totally inadequate...

if i leave at 6am, i still sit in traffic. Every route is congested.

SilverAngel wrote:There are plenty of alternatives before you have to start spending money on roads that aren't causing injury or anything!!

um, the Govts motives for improoving Aks roads arent based on how dangerous they are..... alot of it has to do with the delays shipping overseas goods from the ports.

SilverAngel wrote:but they get no funding for that because Auckland's CBD workers don't want to sit in traffic!!

Actually, Aks CBD workers had no say in where the money went. The condition of the "workers" trip to work isnt a concern for the Govt.

Ak has far more opportunities / well paying jobs /educational facilities then most other cities in NZ.
Ohyeah, businesses dont care about congestion issues, not to mention the impracticallity for many of them to opperate further away from the CBD.

I think, dare I say it, you make a valid point with people moving out of Auckland. But as MrBob says, the businesses don't really care about their workers being stuck in traffic, they just pass the costs on and the consumer pays.

I think with the way technology and telecommunications are moving there will be a shift away from centralised industry, and more "satellite" operations within companies will start out of the main business areas. This is no doubt a long way off.

NO WAY IN HELL!!!
wot they should do is actually spent the money they already steal off us properly. ie: regestration fees and petrol tax. use that on the roads and there would be plenty!
we already pay more down here than you lot, so its only fair they put YOUR petrol up to match what we already pay!

Pay more what? Your rates certainly arent higher, and what about rent? Im sure petrol already is more expensive in aucks allready. Insurance is higher in aucks, as is the acc part when ya pay ur car rego (most of the fee). How many more things shud I be made to pay higher just cuz im in aucks? I dont use the m'way either, so why shud i be hit, and ppl in Wellington not be? Toughen up you whiners, if its for the good of the country, why complain? If they didnt raise pretrol tax around the country, the money has to come from some where, so it will just be coming out of the surplus, which is money that cant be spent else where, and when else where needs money, they will prolly raise petrol tax.

stop bitching at each other!

try bitching directed towards the transport minister or the delightful helen clark and her crew of goonies if you have issues with this tax.

THIS IS ANOTHER OUTLET FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO TAKE YOUR MONEY

omigod! people are fat! tax food

people are on the DPB! tax the workers!

congestion is bad! tax the petrol

are we seeing a theme here at all??

10% of petol tax goes to the road, wouldn't you say that raising that portion to 15% or so, would generate a bit more for the roads?

If anyone bothered to watch the programme directed towards nz's black spots, would be aware that the current deterent is a sploch of paint and a wire fence.

I had the unfortunate experience of a friend at work die a few months back on a relativley small black spot on waitakere roads, the family was told that there was quite a few crashes there before, and so they had put a piece of wood, a goddamn piece of wood for crying out loud to stop it from happening again... WTF?

I won't rant, but the roads are schit, more money won't help.

If I give my paycheck to my cat, what do you think the cat will do children? Set it up in equal portions for me? Giving some to charity, some to healthcare, some to the police, taking an amount for itself and giving me the rest? Then when my pay goes up, would my darling cat give more to the people i nomiate, and would it be fair to each of them for the amount they get? Would it address current issues like P, and black spots on the road? Things like teachers wages, nurses wages, student loans?

Hell no.

My cat would probably chew on the money, then piss on it.

My cat is the government.

I agree, they are planning a new route into the city called transmission gully in wellington, which people in wellington were polled to see if they would pay a toll to use this road? Most people said YES! so why arent they doing things like this? I mean the road would eventually pAY for itself wouldnt it? just like that bridge in tauranga!

We dont really give a shit about strong points of the economy etc, The way you are thinking makes it sound like its better to ease congestion in a main centre than fixing the rest of the countrys stuffed roads to save peoples lives!! I dont give a crap about wellington traffic, i just want the government to fix the roads that are causing so many deaths to people south of the bombays!! Maybe if so many people hadnt died on wellington roads we would be the strongpoint of the economy??

Well, if the government wanted to actually save lives, they would prohibit cigarettes, eliminate unnecessary welfare, and shoot Achmed Zowie between the eyes.

I don't see Labour doing any of these, so basically we're f*cked. I'm all for National and NZ First. GO Winnie!
