why not celica?

Postby NeverAlive » Sat Mar 13, 2004 1:15 am

a mate is looking to get a celica, basically he wants both for a bit of drag and the look.

i am just wondering why there isn't many people building celicas? are their parts hard to get or cost heaps? or their engine simply not powerful enuf? or whatever it is....

he hasn't got too much to spend, basically looking at probably around 5-6 K to get the car, and later on build it up slowly. oh yeah, also what's the differences between GTR and GT4?

any comments on celica would be helpful.
cheers, have a good weekend :D

well, the reason not many ppl modify celicas is because it is differcult and parts are rare!!

The basic difference is:

ZR : Front wheel drive, non turbo with a 3S-FE (economy version) = crap!

GTR : Front wheel drive, non turbo with the 3S-GE.......

GT-FOUR: Full time 4WD, turbo with a 3S-GTE .......

of course the GT-Four have like diffenrent series too. Theres the GT-Four, GT-Four A and the GT-Four RC

mmm awesome, thanx 4 all the replies

i was quite surprised when i was reading some specs about gt4, its like 1400kg or something. that's bloody heavy.
and as for the parts, i will let my mate know about this. so he take all the stuff into his consideration... coz i think he wants to build it up. if the cost it TOO high then its definitely not a good idea. cheers guys.

Is it?

EVO4 is 1400kg. RS Legacy was around the same. EVO VII is 1400kg.

I'd be as bold as saying that if a 2.0 turbo 4wd isn't at least 1350kg then it is lacking in either strength or build quality (ie cheap junk interior). GT-Four isn't lacking in either area.

Sure an early WRX was much lighter, but which is the rattly heap of junk now? They were built for a less discerning market.

the reason I ended up buying a GT-Four was because I just got sick of seeing those damn evo's everywhere... sure they are quick on the quarter mile, but if you were to race them on the motorway i would almost guarantee the GT4 will beat any evo or wrx- well this is coming from first hand experience :D hehe

+ an evo is $75k new, a WRX is $65k new... and the GT4 when it used to retail over here was 96 grand! so hmm... the engineering that when into the celica must be a hell or a lot better then for that price..

one of the reason my mate's looking for a celica is because that's the reasonable price he can afford, and evos, wrxes, skylines are EVERYWHERE. i can hardly NOT to c one skyline or wrx when i go to supermarket 10 minutes drive. he want something different. but got the power as well.

not that i don't believe u, but i just wanna know, what makes u beat those wrx and evos? better driver? better suspension? what is it? i know u can say u beat this car and that, but i like to know why and how? so i know the pros of celica. cheers.

i've heard of a stock ST205 being dragged off (0-400m) on the strip by an I/H/E DC Integra (1.8vtec) - with the celica starting to carch up by the end
(friends of a friend i dont know them really well)

so the weight does handicap them a bit

but some good engine mods would see them heaps faster

On an ST205 exhaust + boost = low 13's
I drove a heavily modified DC2 the other night and although it was fast it just doesn't have the horse to match the turbo cars.

You do have to do a few mods first, I've got a front mount + im boosting 15 psi, but also had the suspension & exhaust done too. The gear ratios are a lot different to the evos, which is what makes it better on the motorway(not that I race or anything, anymore that is..) the evos gear ratio seems to be a lot lower down, where as in my GT4 I can go right to about 130 in second before it cuts out.
The best thing is when you have some prick in an evo pullup with his girl, thinking he will impress her... then he just gets his ass whipped- priceless!
