advice: what tyre brand/model?

Postby Bling » Wed Apr 07, 2004 12:30 am

I need new tyres for me soon to be mags :P

I want to know what people consider to be good performing mid price tyres?

looking at 205/40 17's for my Levin

I have no idea what I should look for, brand wise, everyone seems to claim the ones they use are the best, so I guess thats what I will get here, but if everyone could reccommend a tyre, then i will check the replies and pick a tyre depending on its popularity with my fellow toymota fans :D

Ive just got some Dunlop Formula FM901s in 205/40/17 from Tonys for $180 each fitted and balanced. They were on run out as there being replaced with a new model. 5 or 6 of my mates have them on their cars ranging from Motorsport BMWs to VW golfs and EVO's they seem to be pretty good tyres for the money.

My 2 cents worth anyway

I've also got the Goodyear F1 GSD3's :

I've had them for 15 months and so far they're performing and wearing well.

Don't get Goodyear Super Ducaros.
Lots of squeal but not much cornering force.

i found those tyres pretty good, and they lasted forever

from what i've seen the FM910's grip real well but its cos they're soft so they wear out quick
i'll be getting GDS3's next time i think

anyone had federals Before?

they seem to fall into the "cheaper" bracket, but seem to be ok :)

Dunlop Direzzas i think....look pretty good

i have FM901's on the rear and Nankang NS-1's on the front

not too bad tyres, i dont have much experience with different types but they are pretty good for what i've driven on before

Yeah I run Dunlops as you already know Luke. FM901s on the front and W10s on the back, I only got 6 months (14,000kms) out of the last set of w10s but they grip bloody well ;) FM901s on the front should last about 2 years hahaha

I have 901's on the GSR and love them. If you can get some cheap as they "run out", I'd recommend it. ;)
A friend had them on his EVO 2 and then switched to the new Direzza tyre. He's happy with the new rubber(and they are apparently a smidge quieter on the road)

Also have friends with the Goodyear GSD3 rubber, another one to consider(as suggested already).

Ditto, on my old GLimited i had Grid II's all round. These were good but i believe the replacement Grid III costs $$$

I've got Toyo T1S on my AE101 GTZ, on stock rims. Quite happy with them. I got 45,000km out of my first set of them.

I originally had g grids on the rear of my mr2...they are bridgestone by the way not dunlops, and they have to be the worst tyres ive ever driven on in the rain.

i had toyo t1s, didnt really like them very much, kinda slippery on my car, nanking lol they grip kinda well but talk about wearing out fast!!. got some new rims and they got bridgestone expedias, they are magic in the wet and stopped heaps of my wheel spinning, but i dont like the way they wear. My mate had some gt radials and they hardly wore out and gripped reasonable well

ive used many a set of FM901's over 35,000k's ... If you push em, they dont last, but they grip the road (in the dry, but they are streaks ahead of the crap my new mags came with)...

Im going goodyear f1's for my new set next month

id try to steer clear of those federal's if i were you, here's what i'd recommend, bst at top:

Falken ze512
Goodyear GSD3
Dunlop FM901
Toyo T1S

you wont go wrong with any of those
