SW20 Electric Power Steering Pump - Wiring/Spec?

Hi All,

Does anyone have any information about the electric power steering pumps in the SW20 Mr2?

I'm using one in my stockcar instead of having to run a belt driven pump off the engine.

Unfortunatly mine is drawing 30amps and subsequently gets hot super quick, but it does still work.

I'm trying to find any information about these pumps i.e. wiring, specs
All we have done is connected power straight to it and switched it on. There were 3 other wire to the pump that we are not using, I guess these came from the steering computer to adjust the pressure output of the pump. But I don't know if I should give them power or not, being the reason that I am trying to find a wiring diagram.

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

The pump motor has a fairly beefy seperate controller, which is controlled in turn by an ECU. The ECU gets data from a sensor on the steering column and the ground speed sensor. I'm pretty sure you won't get it running properly without all these components. There are other people around who have a better understanding of the system than me, but they seldom post anymore due to the increasingly large contingent of shaved apes frequenting this forum .

If you have a Gen II pump then these should help, if it's a Gen III then all bets are off as the motor is different and I know it doesn't work with a Gen II controller.

We worked out that some how the pump was getting a back feed of charge from the alternator. Once we disconnected the alternator the pump didn't get hot even after we left it running for 20 minutes.

So the car has now been re-wired and the pump is now running good.
We have just connected the main power feed wires into a switch so when the car is stationary I can switch the pump off, instead of leaving it running flat out.

I've printed out the diagrams and I'll check them over to see if we can work out how to slow the pump down if required.
