MR2 suspension question.

Postby RomanV » Tue Apr 13, 2004 4:11 pm

Hi there.

As far as I knew up until now, my car was 'stock' in terms of suspension.

However, over the weekend, I noticed that I have adjustable shocks on the rear.
The previous owner didnt know anything about this, he didnt seem to know too much about cars in general.

I am sure that my insurance company would like to know about this, I am unsure if the rest of my car still has the standard springs/shocks/etc.

Soo....

Is there a way that I can find out what is, or isnt standard?
Are there standard part numbers stamped on things that I could check?

I am no suspension expert, I dont even know how to adjust them.

Also.... what is 'adjustable' in adjustable shocks?

I would imagine that it would adjust the stiffness of the shocks, but I am unsure.

:?

Hey,

I can't answer your question about the part numbers but as far as most insurance companies are concerned a replacment shock is a replacment shock. Most people get Monroe/KYB non adjustables, youve got brand X adjustables, big deal its not like youve gone and lowered car or anything (have you?). Aftermarket springs are normally painted a briight color like yellow for example, while the factory ones are black with a grease and dirt finish.

As for what they adjust, there are different types but the basic model adjustables adjust one way only, ususally rebound which is the rate that the shock resists the spring as it de-compresses, tyring to stop the spring from overshooting and pushing the car up (bouncy bouncy). (I think thats right, hmmm been a while since I looked at this I could be wrong).
Anyway the main feature is that you can compensate for wear and tear over the life of the shock. That is unless you can get some track time and start playing with the settings to get that last 1/10 second per lap. Which most people don't.

as for finding out whats not standard, if you can't tell by just looking at it go to a toyspeed meet or somthing and compare with a fellow Mr.
