Postby wagn_man » Tue Apr 13, 2004 10:11 pm

Howsit goin guys,

I am looking at maybe buyin a caldina gtt or an mr2 turbo in the not to distant future and was wonering if anyone out there had anything to say about them (reliability,availability/price of parts, fuel consumption etc.)
How about the performance side of things, are they easy to get power out of??

I know they come standard with a decent 191kw, but are they really all that when put up against rivals in the same categoury(legnums, libero's,gsr's etc)??

Two totally different cars there mate, but essentially the same engine (3SGTE), although depending on spec MR2 motor will be less powerful.

Reliable. How long is a piece of string? Its a toyota and with good maintainence should be good. Valve cover gaskets always leak tho.

Parts. All parts as far as i know are avail new from Toyota at general Toyota prices.

Fuel consumption. Best tank for my 54 litres in my MR2 turbo has been 500kms. Worst...around 350kms.

Power. Yeah from what I have seen as long as you keep the fuel up the engine they respond pretty well to mods.

Performance. Even a stock gen1 mr2 turbo will kill a GSR, Libero, Legnum with its modest 220hp. However a fatter Caldina GT-T may be on par.

Buy an ST205
Big brakes, rear seat, 4WD and arguably the best engine setup.

Get a S14 Silvia Ks facelift
2.0L T28 ball bearing Turbo with VVT and rwd, its all good.
Fuel consumption on a s14 ks is bloody awesome, about 10kms a litre
Can also get 200rwkw with standard internals and standard turbo.
Mmmmm silvia 8)

Doh, where'd you get that bit of misinformation from. Been reading too many US sites? That's the redline of the 5S-FE powered USDM, the 3SGTE is redlined at 7250, I set both by Gen IIIs to an 8000rpm redline with no problems.

So the factory redline is 7250?
In Gran Turismo 3 the ST205 GT4 and the MR2 Turbo have 6500rpm redlines, its been right so far about pretty much everything so this is prety weird.

even my old 3SGTE (ST165) revs over 7000rpm. the ' Red part' starts at 7000, but will bounce off the limiter at about 7300rpm...also on Gran turismo an ST165 dose a 16. sumthing down the 1/4, yet my car ran a 15.4sec on 6.5 pounds(std psi) and they are factory quoted as doing 15.6secs

ROTFLMAO

That's got to be the funniest thing I've ever seen on the board, and it goes a long way to explaining the "kwality" info I see on these forums.
