sealant on trd headgasket?

Postby ChaosAD » Tue Apr 13, 2004 7:23 pm

Does anyone know if I need to put sealant around the oil galleries on a 0.8mm trd metal head gasket for my 4age?

there is a copper spray you can use for peace of mind... not sure where to get it tho :o its always talked about on the US supraforums.com yip yip

but if its metal.. its reccomended to have a mirror finish on both head and block...

Wont things start to rust if you mix metals? Isn't copper a catalyst? (I'm probably wrong its been a while since I've done chem)

its not copper, its metal. and all it says on the gasket packaging is 'trd' and the part number.

Im just curious cos there are heaps of lines on the head and block where they were machined

4age trd head gasket

Postby crispy'86 » Wed Apr 14, 2004 10:50 pm

Haven't heard of having to use sealer at all, or been told about using it for trd head gaskets. I have one on my 4age blue top and hasn't had any problems (been on for a year or more)

The copper stuff your referring to is probably VHT quick Gasket or Copperkote. RIPCO sell it, well RIPCO feilding does, you just have to ask for it. Another option you can use is Aluminium paint, I think you buy it for a boat shop. Either work well to seal any form of metal gaskets, I've even used them to help seal turbo flange gaksets.

If it's a multi layer metal gasket you shouldn't need to run any sealant anround it even on the water/oil galleries. But in saying that always check to see what the manufacturer recomomends. The same goes with torque figures & retorquing if need be.
