Noise from front left

Postby TruenoBoy » Sun Apr 18, 2004 1:43 pm

Hey guys I have asked about this ages ago but the noise seemed to go away for a litle while and I never got around to doing anything about it. However its back again and a bit worse. Time to do something about it.

When on hard lock right there is a scraping/squeaking sound comming from the front left . I have also heard a faint clicking but the only time I have heard that was driving in a pretty much straight line at about 15k, only lasted about 30 seconds to a minute. I havent bee nable to get it to do it again. clicking increased as speed increased.

Now my first assumption was the cv joint, however I took a mate for a ride who is a mechanics apprentice and he said it could be the cv but something about it doesnt quite sound like a cv joint.
He thought it could possibly be something to do with the powersteering.

I can't feel any vibration through the steering wheel so that rules out tyre rub. The cv boot looks fine, ie no splits etc. There doesnt seem to be grease or oil leaking around or on the wheel either.

Any other ideas on what it could be, I am going into my mates workshop to get his boss to have a listen but until I get time I Am just wondering what else it could be.

Any ideas and help will be appreciated.

the squealing could be the powersteering belt if it is lose but that would come from the right side of the car

In many cars with p/s if you hold the wheel on full hard lock, you will hear the pressure relief valve operating. This can range from a high pitch squeal to a sort of fizzing noise, as the high pressure hydraulic p/s fuild vents back to the reservoir. It will stop as soon as you take the pressure off the steering wheel. This is a normal.

A clicking noise from a CV is something quite different. It is almost always first heard when you are on full lock and get hard on the gas. This is when the angle of movement of the CV is greatest. It may go away for a while, but it won't fix itself :(

a lot of toyotas have a problem that when you go full lock a certain way, it clips a bolt that is supposed to have a cover on it to stop that. have a look around the suspension arm on that side, and see where there is fresh wear, find the bolt that does the damage, and put something on it. my supra does it, so does dads, a van a friend had did it. it's all the same thing
