MR2 Mechanical Problems

Postby TURCEL » Sat Apr 24, 2004 12:12 am

Have any MR2 owners ran into these problems? (Asking a few questions about them on another forum and was basicly told to get a 200SX/Silvia instead because it was better  )

SW20 3SGTE 1990 spec is the car in question....

1. At full throttle the car will not make full boost, this is because the MR2 is prone to air hose splits, the air filter next to the turbo pressure sensor filling with dirt (it's tiny and hard to check/clean), etc.

2. When the car is running under boost, the car will buck noticably and power will drop off. This is due to the HT electricals of the turbine, a VERY common source of problems with the MR2 that is often overlooked.

3. The car has a tendance to knock under boost, then suddenly lose power. This is because the OEM knock sensor, built into the car, is prone to malfunction and will retard the engine for no reason around 5000RPM.

I know they knock when not using the right octane.....

4. The ECU error codes will not read properly. This is because they are a bastardized version of the error program written for the Celica and have a tendancy misread.

Aint the ECU between the Celica and MR2 the same?

5. The head gasket has a tendancy to go out, leaking antifreeze into the cylinders

The above is ignorant parroting and mangling of known problems with the early model MR2 turbo, and a lot of it is abject crap i.e. "HT electricals of the turbine" FFS. What are you actually trying to find out?
