any random metal bits near the electrical e.g like dipstick?. I had a car once which would short onto the dipstick when it was foggy!?!,
um, possibly something in the carb or pump related then?

did you gap the plugs when you put them back in

i have done that before, taken the plugs out and cleaned them, and not bothered to gap them only to have a miss and ended up replacing the leads and dizzy cap thinking the plugs were sweet

yeap, or it could be out of tune which you should notice which is causing it to backfire but you should notice that too

sounds more like an electical problem, have a look at your dizzy cap, if its worn then replace it, same goes for the dizzy rotor, and failing that you can almost certainly assume the points are going off on you and need to be gapped

should really just give the car a good service and replace all the parts that tend to wear out like the afforementioned and it should run like new

hey man, had the EXACT same problem as you and later on in the track my car stopped idling aswell,
I found out the carby jets needed to be blown out, or as my mechanic said, which i dnt rekon is very true coz ive never heard of it before, is that he needed to replace my idler coil?
