Brake Pads......................

Postby Dave_106gti » Wed Apr 28, 2004 2:31 am

Right lads what are the best pads to go for ? for my AE111 BZ-R

Mine are just about worn out on the front and its my first time changing them so any suggestions ? looking for something a bit better than standard ie. a fast road pad

The back pads are fine but should I change these at the same time ?

I got a price on Project Mu pads direct from japan of 17,535yen which is to you guys about 256.00 New Zealand Dollars

:D
http://forums.toyspeed.org.nz/viewtopic.php?t=5552 though the freight might be a killer. That price sounds insanely high, are you paying for performance, or are you paying for a brand name?

I went with Mintex 1166 all around in my car, which did affect the handbrake performance a little. But otherwise, very impressed.

Oh yeah, do new fluid at the same time. Fluid's usually only performing at it's best for a year.

Hey,

I can't say I've shopped round, or tried other brands, but when I wanted pads everyone pointed me to 0800BRAKES (Race Brakes).

They charge per square cm of pad used as they bond the new compound onto your old backplates. For the 8 pads and 1l of fluid it cost me about $600. Keep in mind that the supra has quite large brakepads so it shouldn't cost you this much.

I got the M1166 compound for my car, but they'll probably recommend the M1155 for a AE111 as its a smaller car. I'm so impressed with these pads, no brake fade EVER while having them in the car, even on Taupo track last year, 180km/h hard braking off the back straight every lap...

As far as the old wives tale of Race Pads being bad for the road - I guess this used to be true, but the Mintex M1166 cold performance for a similar pedal pressure was BETTER than my stock pads. So really, its a win/win situation....

If you have any Q's give them a call, they're always willing to help and have a really good attitude. 0800 BRAKES.

Now if only these mintex people made tyres.... ;)

Ben.

P.S. Can't comment on the handbrake issue as my car has seperate handbrake drums inside the rear rotors.

My 2c...

I went to Race Breaks. Got me a full set of M1166... kicks the frilly buttocks. Couldn't fade them, even after around 15 laps of Taupo being chased by a AE101.
Raced down to Piha once... No fade... Even ruined my rear pads and the front two would still stop the car really well...

Yes, handbrake sufffered a little... but who cares... for performance you can't go past the Mintex M11xx range... I took the 66, I've been told the 44 is real street car stuff, while the 55 is probably the best compromise for many laps...

Guys at Race Brakes will set you right... never know there maybe something more suitable for a AE111...

I have used 1166 on the road without any issues at all. Bloody sight better cold performance than the pads that came out. This is on a light car AE92 'Rolla.

However, as pointed out, getting the backing pads from Ireland to Auckland, and then back... hmmmm.

depending on what front calipers you have (i have 2 piston) i have found the standard Lucas pads to be good, never had brake fade with them and i drive on manfield racing circuit a bit, approx 4-5 laps at a time pretty hard, the only thing ive found is that they are a shocker for brake dust!!

I have EBC Greenstuff pads in my AE101 Trueno Supercharged (has superstrut and twinpot calipers)
When cold they work about the same as the standard pads. Warm/hot they are fabulous. Never fade either.
You should be able to track EBC pads down in europe.
Only thing to watch for - for the AE101 corolla/levin/trueno there are 3 different calipers, therefor 3 different shaped pads. It might pay to photocopy one of your front pads and take it in when you go to get new pads. This way they can check the pad against what is in the catalog or fax it off to the supplier so you get the right ones first time (from personal experience!)
Good luck.

Do you have a local speed shop, or car club?

They might be good sources to point you at some good pad material ... it seems like you are gravitating towards brand names with (I am assuming) fat price tags attached.

I too haven't heard anything good about EBC pads, other than they have nice pretty ads in magazines.
