It has probably always been backfiring but now you can actually hear it.

yes..well..the first cylinder is losing compression, so would that be a reason..i prob should pay more attention when listening to the techs at work..:(

?

This would normally be a leak in the exhaust letting air into the mixture and helping ignite the unburnt fuel.

hmm..im confused :(.. what is the most likely reason and easiest way to fix it..since there are no error codes for this, how could i find out what the problem is without having to rip the exhaust off etc ?

Likely reason = exhaust leak.... either a flange isn't meeting up correctly letting air in or there is physically a hole somewhere in the piping.
The other possibility as suggested above is that with your new free flowing exhaust you just hear the natural post combustion detonation easier.

Its not really a big deal - it won't do much except possibly let a little bit of CO2 etc out before the exhaust tip and you'd fail a WOF if they noticed.

yeap, it'll do that when you only have half an exhaust

my old mazda did the same when i got a mighty coby put in to replace a perfectly good baffled silencer, when you down shifted you got a mighty mighty WOOOOOooom bom bom boom (when you accelerated you got a cloud of blue smoke), that car was a beast, only when your 15/16 do you mod your cars that hardcore, and it was hardcore

they will backfire on the overrun, its worse with too big diameter exhausts, all carby cars seem to do it
