wanna clean my engine bay

Postby ELOK » Thu May 06, 2004 1:10 am

hey all, after staring at my engine bay for a good 5 minutes at the filth thats in it i realised it needs a clean, if you look at the engine it looks dark grey nearly black, now i thought that was kool and normal, but when i moved my finger along it guess what was under the black.. RED! my engine is red! but u cant see it cos of the shit thats all over it, its just balck all over the place, so how do i clean it out??? without removing anything. can i just go at it with a waterblaster as long as i dont break anything with it?

peace.

Engine degreaser.
Can buy it just about anywhere for sweet F A.
Think even Ripco sell it for $4 a can?

I DEFINITELY wouldn't recommend waterblasting your engine

Loads and loads of degreaser, newspaper and time ... will give you a sparkling clean and minty fresh engine bay :)

Real men avoid steam cleans!

Remember kiddies - just don't do it! (unless you really want to risk replacing your distributor, fuel injection and other sensitive electrical systems....)

:p

Elbow grease + degreaser!

honestly, the best way to clean your engine is to go to washworld and spray degreaser all over it and the fire wall and sub frame, go hard use a couple of cans. i think you might want becareful about spraying the hot exhaust tho. then let it sit as per the instructions and then go hard with the high pressure water and get right up close. spay all the electrics - no problem - just go hard over everything - your engine will look like its come straight from the showroom. seriously. btw i only did this on carb car - 5k dx but it started fine even after i waterblasted the dizzy etc. would take a bit more care with efi electrics, fuel rail etc.

let it sit for a couple of minutes i think - wash world is one of those places that you take your car to wash it yourself - they have a high pressure water blaster and a proper sewerage system so you dont wash litres of degreaser into the ocean :) or make a mess in your own driveway.

get your degreaser from the warehouse they have it real cheap like. dont listen to ppl about not waterbalsting - it works too well not to do :) - it is the most effective and easiest way you could ever clean your engine. then buy some red ign. leads from repco and your motor will look so nice. it will add 500 bux to the resale value of you car. seriously.

I always use degreeser or similar and a softish brush to scrub away at the tar'd stuff, then just low pressure wash off (i.e hose), always works fine!
with parts off the car I do the same, or a mix of dishwashing liquid and laundry powder in hot water- cheep and supa effective!

hey this is really kool, i love learnign new stuff about cars :D

ok im gonna do this in the weekend!

while we're on the subjuct of cleaning, i will ask a question a bit off subject. ok that didnt make sense :?

anyways my paint is real faded in some areas of the car and i was wondering if theres any way to get it looking nice again, not like full looking like brand new kinda stuff, just a bit more presentable and shiny. any tips?

also ive been sanding rust off my car all week and probably only done about 5cm squared of rust, i used a flathead screw driver to scrape the bad stuff off and then sanded it with wet'n'dry sandpaper and then sprayed "rustfix" over that and then some touch up paint over that, problem is it takes a long time and is very hard work. any easier way to do it? its not bad rust its just small patches of surface rust.

wow that was kinda long, sorry

peace

For the paint, give it a cut n polish- dont go 2 hard or you will rub through!- I always cut n polish with a little water, but thats just my preference. done well faded paint will look like new. If you put a coat of wax over after that it should stay good for ages

For the rust-unless ya wana get an electric sander into the equation I'd do it just how you are doing it- hard works good 4 ya!

I got told that waterblasting was potentially dangerous for the car as it can push oil out of where its supposed to be? I'm not too sure on this, but its a chance I aint gonna be taking :D
