Depends entirely on what kind of application you're looking at. There are different profiles you can get ground to, depending on how you want the engine to respond.

Generally, if you go for an aggressive profile grind, you will gain power at the top end, at the expense of pick up at the lower end.

A mild cam grind will produce results without adversely affecting your bottom end performance.

I'm sure someone on here will be able to tell you more about getting it done on a silvertop / blacktop 20 valve (I'm all GZE  )

kelford can reprofiel your cams for $550+gst and they also give you shims as well. Thats a street fighter grind, and can be used with a standard ecu, they recon 10% more hp.

brand new cams made from a blank will cost $990+gst from kelford

You can get good gains from changing the cam profiles on almost nay motor. Only a silvertop 20V you can get a reasonable gain but can't go excessively wild due to the VVT Setup(unless you remove it). But then if you alter the cam profile you will probably have to change the VVT/VVTi activation points to suit anyway to get maximum gains. The main thing to watch for it that the base circle of the the cam doesn't become too small resulting in the need for thick shims which have a habit of tipping & jamming or falling out depedning on if the shim is under the cam bucket or on top. Don't get the built up with weld(stellite etc) as it will crack & fail, I've yet to see a set of built up cams last any distance. With the Blacktop/Silvertop 20v's it would pay to replace the valve springs if you damn a cam change as in stock form the valve springs aren't the greatest once you start increasing lift duration, even replacing with a new standard set would help, if you can't get/afford Toda/TRD or the likes.

I can do a similar price to Kelfords on the grinding, only problem is it will probably take longer for my grinder to do them due to the extra day or two required for me to freight them to them & back.

i had my stock cams regroud on a stock silvertop head, made 175ish hp at engine. These cams are now spare. Ground not welded requires thicker shims, (underbucket type as stock on 20v anyway)

Yes I remembered when I woke up in the middle of the night that I'd got it wrong!! Sorry about that. You going to be at the track day? I'll be having a look but not racing. Might need to talk to you about a couple of things if you're there. Since you had the drive in the MR2 last time, I've fitted a rear sway bar so no understeer now - feels heaps better. All I need now is an LSD and I'd be happy.
